The UK government has announced an urgent £20 million emergency energy support package for Ukraine, responding to a state of emergency declared by President Volodymyr Zelensky after sustained Russian assaults on critical power infrastructure.
Emergency Repairs Amid Sub-Zero Crisis
Emergency crews across Ukraine are battling to restore electricity and heating to cities plunged into darkness by recent missile and drone attacks. The situation is critical, with night-time temperatures dropping close to -20°C during one of the coldest winters in years. Thousands of apartment buildings require urgent repairs compounded by the bitter cold.
President Zelensky highlighted the severity of the crisis on social media, stating, "The consequences of Russian strikes and deteriorating weather conditions are severe. Many issues require urgent resolution." He has called for more warming centres where residents can find heat and charge essential electronic devices.
UK's Expanding Support Package
The new £20 million in funding is specifically earmarked to repair, restore, and protect Ukraine's battered power grid throughout the winter months. Its primary goal is to ensure electricity and heating remain available for homes, hospitals, and schools.
This latest commitment brings Britain's total support for Ukraine's energy sector since the full-scale Russian invasion to over £470 million. In a significant defence move, the UK has also sealed a £1.6 billion deal to supply advanced air-defence missiles to Ukraine.
Building a 100-Year Partnership
Beyond immediate humanitarian aid, the UK is deepening long-term ties with Ukraine. The government is expanding its school-twinning scheme under the "100 Year Partnership", committing to add 300 more linked schools over the next three years. This programme is set to benefit 54,000 pupils across both nations.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the century-long partnership reflects the very values Russia seeks to destroy. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper added that the school links will help build vital skills for young people in both countries.
Britain is set to host a major partnership event in Kyiv on Friday, bringing together more than 300 participants to solidify these enduring links.
