In a significant escalation of transatlantic tensions, the United Kingdom has joined forces with key European allies to issue a stern rebuke to former US President Donald Trump over his threat to impose punitive tariffs.
NATO Allies Warn of 'Dangerous Downward Spiral'
The coordinated response came after Donald Trump warned he would slap 10% tariffs on countries including the UK for opposing his stated ambition to orchestrate a takeover of Greenland. The threat was delivered on the night of 17 January 2026. Trump further warned that these levies on NATO allies could skyrocket to 25% on 1 June 2026 if a deal to purchase the autonomous Danish territory is not secured.
Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom presented a united front in a powerful joint statement. The allies, all members of the NATO defence pact, accused the tariff threats of undermining the fundamental principles of their alliance and international norms.
A Firm Defence of Sovereignty and Arctic Security
The statement directly addressed the context of the dispute, firmly aligning the nations behind Denmark and Greenland. "We stand in full solidarity with the Kingdom of Denmark and the people of Greenland," it declared. The allies emphasised their commitment to engaging in dialogue but only on the basis of the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
They also defended recent military exercises in the region, specifically referencing the pre-coordinated Danish exercise ‘Arctic Endurance’. The statement clarified that such activities, conducted with allies, are intended to strengthen shared Arctic security interests and "pose no threat to anyone".

The core of the allies' warning focused on the profound damage threatened by the proposed economic measures. They stated unequivocally that "tariff threats undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral".
Asserting their resolve, the group of eight nations pledged to remain "united and coordinated" in their response, reaffirming their unwavering commitment to upholding their national sovereignty against what they perceive as economic coercion.
