Trump Issues 10-Day Ultimatum to Iran in Board of Peace Address
President Trump has delivered a stark warning to Iran, demanding that the nation agree to curb its nuclear program within the next 10 days or face severe consequences. In a speech at his inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace, Trump emphasised that "bad things will happen" if a meaningful deal is not reached promptly.
Escalating Tensions in the Middle East
The ultimatum comes amid a significant bolstering of US military presence in the region. The United States has deployed a large number of warplanes and two aircraft carrier groups, heightening fears of imminent conflict. Trump stated, "Good talks are being had. It's proven to be, over the years, not easy to make a meaningful deal with Iran. We have to make a meaningful deal, otherwise bad things happen." He further stressed that Iran "cannot have a nuclear weapon" and indicated that military action could be initiated "over the next, probably 10 days" in the absence of an agreement.
Iran's Defiant Response
In response, Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, issued a counter-threat, warning that the US could be "struck so hard that it cannot get back up" if it renews attacks. Tehran has already conducted naval drills, including closing the strategic Strait of Hormuz and engaging in joint exercises with Russia. Earlier reports suggested that US forces might be prepared to strike as early as Saturday, adding urgency to the diplomatic standoff.
The situation remains volatile, with both sides positioning for potential confrontation. The international community watches closely as the deadline approaches, hoping for a peaceful resolution to avert further escalation in the already tense Middle East region.
