A social media post from Donald Trump's foreign envoy has sparked intense speculation after appearing to accidentally reveal the source of a leaked peace plan designed to end Russia's war in Ukraine.
The Social Media Slip-Up
Responding to an Axios report about secret US-Russia negotiations, Steve Witkoff wrote on X: 'He must have gotten this from K.' The cryptic message immediately set off a guessing game among users of the platform, with many attempting to identify the mysterious 'K'.
The prime suspect became Kirill Dmitriev, the Russian official quoted extensively in the original story, while others suggested Jared Kushner might be the source. However, two separate sources informed the Daily Mail that Witkoff doesn't refer to Kushner as 'K', pointing the finger squarely at the Kremlin envoy instead.
This diplomatic gaffe suggests Russia may be deliberately leaking details of the sensitive negotiations, raising questions about Moscow's intentions in the peace process.
The Secret Peace Plan Revealed
The leak has uncovered that the White House has been working behind the scenes to develop a comprehensive 28-point peace plan with Russia, according to a source familiar with diplomatic conversations who spoke with the Daily Mail. This effort aims to deliver on the president's campaign promise to end the conflict in Ukraine.
The ambitious peace plan is reportedly inspired by the success of Trump's lead negotiators in the Middle East, where the former president enacted a 20-point peace plan in Gaza that succeeded. Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff, who is also handling conversations with Russian leaders, is spearheading this new diplomatic effort.
A Russian official told Axios they feel 'optimistic' about the proposed plan, with sources indicating the points fall into four main categories: security guarantees, peace in Ukraine, security in Europe, and the US relationship with both Russia and Ukraine.
However, plans for territorial control in eastern Ukraine remain unclear, representing a significant hurdle in any potential agreement.
Diplomatic Movements and Reactions
As part of ongoing peace talks, a Pentagon US delegation is visiting Kyiv on Wednesday. Army secretary Dan Driscoll, along with other senior military officials, is on what an army spokesperson described as a 'fact finding mission to meet with Ukrainian officials and discuss efforts to end the war.'
Travelling alongside Driscoll to Kyiv are Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George, Sergeant Major of the Army Michael Weimer and Gen. Chris Donahue. CNN reports that Driscoll planned to discuss battlefield conditions, military needs and peace efforts with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Two diplomats speaking anonymously claimed to the Daily Mail that they believe the White House intended for the information to leak, hoping to reinforce the narrative that Trump is actively working behind the scenes to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
'It's fine if it actually produces some results, but the bottom line is that Putin will never give up his goal, even if he tries to appear to participate in some 'deal',' a former diplomat to Europe told Daily Mail.
When questioned about the matter, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that there are 'no new developments to report at this time' concerning an end to the war.
Meanwhile, in Washington, Republicans are attempting to move forward with legislation backed by Senator Lindsey Graham that would effectively sanction Russia. The bill grants the president authority to impose secondary sanctions and tariffs on countries that continue purchasing discounted Russian oil and gas, with countries like Iran potentially being added to the list.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment, nor did Witkoff's team, leaving many questions unanswered about the true origins and intentions behind the leaked peace plan.
