President Donald Trump has declared that Israel and Lebanon have reached an agreement for a 10-day ceasefire, aiming to pave the way for a broader peace deal between the two nations. In a Truth Social post on Thursday, Trump stated he held "excellent conversations" with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, resulting in this temporary halt to hostilities set to begin at 5 P.M. EST.
Diplomatic Efforts and US Involvement
Trump emphasised that this development follows a historic meeting in Washington, D.C., where Israeli and Lebanese officials convened for the first time in 34 years. The talks were facilitated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, marking a significant step in regional diplomacy. Trump has directed Vice President JD Vance and Secretary Rubio, alongside Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Razin' Caine, to collaborate with both countries to secure a lasting peace.
Trump's Broader Claims and Regional Context
In his post, Trump boasted of his record in conflict resolution, claiming, "It has been my Honor to solve 9 Wars across the World, and this will be my 10th." He urged all parties to "GET IT DONE!" However, neither Israel nor Lebanon have officially confirmed the ceasefire, leaving the announcement unverified by the involved nations.
The ceasefire claim emerges against a backdrop of escalating tensions in the Middle East. The United States recently initiated a blockade of Iranian ports, which has disrupted shipping and increased uncertainty in the region. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has issued a stern warning, stating that American forces are "locked and loaded" to launch further attacks on Iran if it refuses to agree to a deal.
Ongoing US-Iran Negotiations
Simultaneously, the US is engaged in efforts to organise a second round of talks with Iran, aiming to de-escalate the broader conflict. This dual-track approach highlights the complex geopolitical landscape, where ceasefire announcements intersect with military posturing and diplomatic manoeuvres.
The situation remains fluid, with the potential for rapid changes as international actors navigate these delicate negotiations. Observers are closely monitoring for official confirmations from Israel and Lebanon, which would lend credibility to Trump's assertions and potentially signal a new chapter in Middle Eastern peace efforts.
