Tom Gray, currently starring as a contestant on ITV's adventure reality show The Summit, has disclosed his heroic role as a bystander during the devastating 2019 London Bridge terror attack. The revelation came during Tuesday's episode of the programme, hosted by Ben Shephard, where Gray recounted the harrowing events that unfolded while he was working as a London tour guide.
Intervening in a Terrorist Attack
Gray described driving over London Bridge on what seemed like a standard workday when he realised he had stumbled upon a terrorist incident. He witnessed three individuals chasing the attacker out of Fishmongers' Hall and pinning him to the ground. In a courageous attempt to assist, Gray stamped on the terrorist's wrist to force him to drop one of his knives, a detail later confirmed by BBC reports at the time.
Recalling the Moment on Television
During the episode aired on February 10, Gray shared his perspective: "I tried to be as useful as I possibly could. Kicked one of the knives out of the terrorist's hands. Armed police turned up. And we then were told that he had a bomb vest on. Turns out it was a hoax." He reflected on how the experience profoundly impacted his outlook, stating, "That was something that really made me think life can change in an instant. Don't always try and plan for the future because the future might not actually come for you. So when this opportunity landed in front of me, I've got to take it with my hands."
Background of the London Bridge Attack
The London Bridge attack occurred in November 2019, when Usman Khan, a man previously imprisoned for terrorism-related offences, fatally stabbed two people: Saskia Jones, aged 23, and Jack Merritt, aged 25. Multiple bystanders intervened to subdue Khan before police officers fatally shot him. Gray's actions were part of this collective effort to stop the violence.
Competing on The Summit
Now, Gray is one of fourteen contestants on The Summit, facing the daunting challenge of conquering a mountain in New Zealand's South Island Alps within a mere two weeks. The competitors are vying for a share of a £200,000 prize pot, navigating treacherous terrain, volatile weather, and formidable obstacles orchestrated by the mysterious Mountain's Keeper. Strategy and physical prowess are equally crucial, with the elimination of other participants forming a key aspect of the contest.
The Summit airs on ITV, showcasing Gray's journey from a real-life hero to a television adventurer, highlighting how personal experiences can shape one's approach to new opportunities and challenges.
