Stella McCartney Opens Up About Mother Linda's Emotional Struggles with Beatles Fandom

Stella McCartney has candidly shared the profound hurt her mother, Linda McCartney, endured due to bullying from fans of her husband, Paul McCartney, during the peak of The Beatles' fame. In a revealing new archival documentary titled Paul McCartney: Man on the Run, the 54-year-old fashion designer reflects on the emotional toll this criticism took on her family.

The Origins of Paul and Linda's Partnership

Paul McCartney first encountered Linda Eastman in 1966, with their formal introduction occurring the following year. The couple married in 1961 and, after The Beatles disbanded in 1970, they performed together in the band Wings. Linda, who had a background as a photographer with her work featured on the cover of Rolling Stone, lacked a musical pedigree but contributed vocals and keyboard to the group.

This unconventional role sparked backlash from fans who questioned her inclusion and whether she deserved a place in Wings. The hatred directed at Linda, who passed away from cancer in 1998 at age 56, is a central theme in the documentary, which premiered in limited cinemas last week and will be available on Prime Video from 27 February.

Stella's Heartfelt Account of Her Mother's Pain

In the film, Stella McCartney expresses deep sorrow over the treatment her mother faced. "She wasn't a cookie-cutter example of someone you put in a band. What they, and she especially, had to go through, like when they isolated her voice and ridiculed her? I mean, it breaks my heart," she said. "I know that there was pain there. I knew she hurt. She wasn't cold."

Paul McCartney, now 83, taught Linda to play keyboard after The Beatles split, and he admitted in the documentary that the idea to include her in Wings was spontaneous. However, he vehemently defended his late wife against critics who disparaged her abilities. "She can't do this, she can't sing, she can't play piano, she can't do anything. Oh, they're crazy man, what's he got his old lady in the band for? Who the hell is this?" he recalled, countering that Linda brought a "special sound" to their songs.

The Legacy of Wings and Linda's Later Years

Wings, which included members like Denny Laine on guitar and vocals and Denny Seiwell on drums, achieved significant success, winning multiple Grammy Awards and earning an Oscar nomination for their James Bond theme "Live and Let Die." Although Wings disbanded in 1981, Linda continued to perform with Paul until 1993.

Beyond music, Linda and Paul embraced vegetarianism in 1975 and launched a range of vegetarian foods under Linda's name in 1991. Linda was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1995 and succumbed to the disease in 1998. Paul has since remarried twice, to Heather Mills from 2002 to 2008 and to Nancy Shevell in 2011.

This documentary sheds light on the personal struggles behind the public personas, highlighting the resilience of the McCartney family in the face of fan-driven criticism.
