Sir Keir Starmer has urgently convened the Government's emergency Cobra committee as missile strikes continue to destabilise the Middle East region. This decisive action follows a series of retaliatory attacks launched by Iran in response to earlier US-Israeli military operations.

On Saturday morning, combined forces from the United States and Israel executed what they described as a "pre-emptive" strike against Iran. The operation, officially named Operation Roaring Lion by Israel and Operation Epic Fury by the US, targeted the Tehran government's nuclear weapons development programme. Authorities stated the objective was to "thoroughly degrade the Iranian terrorist regime and remove existential threats to Israel."
Former US President Donald Trump publicly endorsed the mission on his Truth Social platform, declaring it "a noble mission" necessary to counter Iran's attempts to rebuild nuclear capabilities and develop long-range missiles threatening allies and American interests.
The attack prompted immediate retaliation from Iran, with missiles reportedly targeting Israel and various locations across the Middle East. The spokesperson emphasised Britain's commitment to preventing "further escalation into a wider regional conflict" while reiterating support for a negotiated solution to Iran's nuclear ambitions.
"Iran must never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon," the spokesperson stated. "That is why we have continually supported efforts to reach a negotiated solution. Our immediate priority is the safety of UK nationals in the region, and we will provide them with consular assistance, available 24/7."
Following the strikes, the Foreign Office issued comprehensive travel warnings, advising against all travel to Israel. British embassies in Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates instructed nationals to shelter in place as security conditions deteriorated.
