Son of Brits Trapped in Iran Prison Travels to US to Plead with Trump for Help
Joe Bennett, the son of a British couple imprisoned in Iran, is making a desperate journey to the United States to appeal directly to Donald Trump for assistance in securing their release. His parents, Lindsay and Craig Foreman, both aged 53, have been held in Tehran's notorious Evin prison since their arrest during a global motorcycle trip, and were sentenced to 10 years in January 2025.
Living in 'Hell on Earth' Amid Escalating Conflict
Mr Bennett has described the conditions his parents endure as 'hell on earth,' a situation exacerbated by the prison's location in a conflict zone. Evin prison has been caught in the crossfire of US-Israeli bombardment, with a bomb previously exploding nearby, causing significant distress among inmates and raising fears for their safety.
Allegations of British Government Letdown
In a stark criticism, Mr Bennett alleges that the British government has 'let down' his parents. He claims that consular staff failed to inform them of the escalating conflict before they left Iran, a failure he believes contributed to their current plight. Despite repeated pleas for help, he has received no response from the British Prime Minister or Foreign Secretary, prompting his turn to international intervention.
US Capitol Appeal and Hopes for Trump's Intervention
Mr Bennett plans to address the US Capitol during his visit, hoping to capture Donald Trump's attention and secure his intervention. He views this as a last resort after exhausting all avenues with UK authorities, emphasizing the urgency due to the ongoing risks in the prison environment.
The case highlights broader issues of diplomatic efforts in high-risk regions and the challenges faced by families of detainees abroad. As Mr Bennett embarks on this transatlantic plea, the international community watches closely, with many calling for increased pressure on Iran to release foreign prisoners amid geopolitical tensions.
