Singaporean YouTuber Deported from US and Arrested for Military Draft Evasion

In a dramatic turn of events, Singaporean YouTuber Amos Yee was deported from the United States and immediately arrested upon his return to Singapore on Friday, facing charges for allegedly skipping mandatory military conscription. The arrest occurred at Changi Airport, where enlistment inspectors took him into custody as he arrived from the US, according to officials from Singapore's Ministry of Defence.

Charges and Court Proceedings

Yee was charged under Singapore's Enlistment Act for failing to report for pre-enlistment medical screening and remaining outside the country without a valid exit permit. Court documents reveal that he appeared via video-link from the cantonment complex around 11:50 am, with long hair and wearing a long-sleeved black shirt. Deputy prosecutors Tay Jia En and Chong Kee En requested a remand of about one week for further investigations, which the judge granted, ordering Yee to be held in Changi prison.

During the brief court appearance, Yee said nothing except repeating "no" when asked if he was engaging legal counsel, as reported by CNA. This marks a new legal chapter for Yee, who has a history of controversial run-ins with the law in both Singapore and the US.

Background and US Conviction

Yee, a Singapore citizen, left his home country in 2016 and was granted asylum in the US in 2017, despite opposition from the Department of Homeland Security. His asylum came after he was imprisoned twice in Singapore as a teenager for posting videos that criticised religion, including remarks about Christians and Muslims, and comparing former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew to Hitler and Jesus.

However, his time in the US took a dark turn. In 2020, he was arrested for possessing videos of child sexual abuse and grooming a 14-year-old girl he met online. An Illinois court heard that he used WhatsApp to "seduce and solicit her" and then distributed her photos online. He was sentenced to six years' imprisonment in December 2021, released on parole in October 2023, but re-arrested a month later for violating parole conditions.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) took him into custody for deportation proceedings after his release from the Danville Correctional Centre in Illinois on parole in November 2025. Authorities listed Yee among the "worst of the worst criminal aliens arrested by ICE," highlighting the severity of his offences.

Previous Legal Issues in Singapore

Yee's legal troubles in Singapore date back to 2015 when he was jailed for hurting religious feelings by making remarks about Christians. He faced charges again in 2016 for similar offences against Christians and Muslims. Known for his controversial rants, Yee's actions have repeatedly drawn the ire of Singaporean authorities, leading to his initial imprisonment and subsequent flight to the US.

The deportation and arrest underscore the ongoing enforcement of Singapore's strict laws, including mandatory military conscription for male citizens. As investigations proceed, Yee remains in custody, awaiting further legal proceedings in his home country.
