Saturday Night Live UK Targets Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor in Biting Opening Sketch
The second episode of Saturday Night Live UK launched with a sharply satirical opening sketch directed at Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the former Duke of York. The comedy segment, which aired on Sunday 29 March 2026, presented a fictional narrative where the 66-year-old former prince was recruited by MI5 in a long-term scheme to enhance the public image of the future King Charles through deliberate contrast.
Jack Shep Portrays Andrew in Elaborate Satirical Premise
Comedian Jack Shep took on the role of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor in the five-minute sketch, which opened in the year 1997. The scene depicted the Queen's third son being summoned by secret service operatives to discuss a top-secret plan to rehabilitate then-Prince Charles' reputation following the death of Princess Diana.
"Since the death of Princess Diana the public have turned on Prince Charles, but still, one day he will be King," one MI5 agent tells Shep's Andrew character. "We need to make him look good." Another agent elaborates that "the only way to increase the likeability of our future King is to decrease the likeability of everyone around him" – including Andrew himself.
Sketch References Controversial Associations and Interviews
The sketch made pointed references to Andrew's real-life controversies, including his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Shep's character flips through a substantial file of proposed actions before questioning the agents: "And you actually want me to do all this stuff? Even the bit about befriending a notorious paedophile? Before and after he's convicted?"
The comedy segment also featured cast member Larry Dean appearing as former politician Peter Mandelson, whom Andrew's character praises as "the most honourable, ethical politician we have." Emma Sidi made a cameo appearance as Andrew's ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, adding to the ensemble cast.
Code Words and Real-World Legal Context
In a clear nod to Andrew's infamous 2019 Newsnight interview, the sketch includes MI5 agents promising to intervene if Andrew ever utters the code words "Pizza Express Woking." Shep's character responds with the line: "I'm not sure how I'll ever fit that into the conversation, but I'll make it sound as natural as possible."
The sketch aired against the backdrop of real-world legal developments involving the former prince. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested in February on suspicion of misconduct in public office, specifically regarding accusations that he shared confidential information with Jeffrey Epstein during his tenure as the UK's special representative for international trade and investment. The former Duke of York has consistently denied any wrongdoing related to his association with the financier.
This satirical take represents Saturday Night Live UK's continued engagement with contemporary British figures and controversies, blending comedy with pointed social commentary about the royal family and public perception.
