Minister's 'Idiots' Remark Sparks Diplomatic Row
A Singaporean minister has issued an apology after footage emerged of him describing Hong Kong's football players and supporters as "idiots" following a crucial qualifying match. David Neo, the acting minister for culture, community and youth, was captured on camera making the disparaging comments during celebrations of Singapore's 2-1 victory over Hong Kong.
The incident occurred during a post-match livestream after Singapore secured their place in the 2027 Asia Cup tournament. Mr Neo was heard saying: "It was fantastic. You were pressured by them, all the fans were bloody idiots. Players also... played like idiots, but you all played like lions."
Swift Backlash and Damage Control
The minister's comments prompted immediate criticism from netizens and observers who described his language as completely "out of order" for someone in his position. Facing growing outrage, Mr Neo acknowledged on Instagram that he "probably should've been more respectful".
In his apology, the minister attempted to walk back his remarks, stating: "The Hong Kong team were really tough and their fans were fully behind them. That's something we should respect and let's also get behind our Lions." However, he later uploaded a clip of his locker-room appearance on Facebook without directly addressing why he had chosen to repeat the offensive message publicly.
Historic Victory Overshadowed by Controversy
For many Hong Kong supporters, the apology did little to ease their frustration as the controversy cast a shadow over what should have been a purely celebratory occasion. Singapore made sporting history by defeating Hong Kong to secure their spot in the 2027 Asia Cup tournament in Saudi Arabia, marking the first time they have qualified on merit rather than as hosts.
The nation's only previous Asia Cup appearance came in 1984 when they automatically qualified as tournament hosts. Singapore's landmark achievement received recognition from the highest levels of government, with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam praising the team for making history and their "skilful team play and guts in front of an overwhelming home crowd at the Kai Tak stadium".
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong also celebrated the victory on social media, stating: "Tonight our Lions roared! To the players, coaches and the whole team – thank you for your grit, heart and never-say-die spirit. You've made Singapore proud and we are with you all the way."
Despite the political leadership's attempts to focus on the sporting achievement, the diplomatic incident involving Minister Neo's comments continued to dominate discussions, highlighting the delicate nature of international sportsmanship and political conduct.
