Shonda Rhimes Reveals Her Ideal Partner Must Be Intelligent and Worldly
Shonda Rhimes: Intelligence Key for Ideal Partner

Shonda Rhimes Opens Up About Her Search for an Intelligent Life Partner

Shonda Rhimes, the celebrated creator behind hit television series such as Grey's Anatomy and Bridgerton, has crafted some of the most beloved romantic characters on screen. However, in a candid discussion, the 56-year-old director revealed that she is still seeking her own real-life Mr. Right, with intelligence being the paramount quality she desires.

Intelligence and Global Awareness as Key Attributes

During a recent episode of Craig Melvin's podcast, Glass Half Full, Rhimes delved into her single status and what she looks for in a romantic partner. When asked to describe the perfect man if she were to write him as a character, Rhimes emphasized that physical appearance is secondary to personality traits.

"I think for me the most attractive thing about somebody is them being intelligent, like really smart, and having an opinion about the world. To me, that's interesting," she explained. "I don't care if you're an activist or in philanthropy, but you have to be somebody who's involved in the world."

Rhimes further highlighted that a partner must be knowledgeable and engaged with global issues, making a playful plea to Melvin and his wife to help set her up with someone fitting this description.

Family Dynamics and Dating Life

Rhimes shared amusing anecdotes about her three daughters' reactions to her dating life. Her eldest daughter, Harper, 23, has taken an active role, encouraging her mother to "make the magic happen" before dates. In contrast, her younger daughters, Emerson, 12, and Beckett, 11, are less enthusiastic, often questioning her makeup and preferring her at home.

"They're those kids who like me as me and at home, and they can't imagine me as a separate person, and I get that. I'm their mom," Rhimes noted, reflecting on their protective nature.

Rhimes adopted Harper in 2002, Emerson a decade later, and welcomed Beckett via surrogate in 2013, showcasing her dedication to motherhood.

Evolving Perspectives on Marriage

In a shift from her previous stance, Rhimes discussed how her views on marriage have transformed over the years. During an appearance on Alex Cooper's Call Her Daddy podcast in October, she admitted that her firm opposition to marriage might no longer hold true.

"I've never been a person who thought about getting married. I was a person who, like I always knew I was gonna be a mom. I've always known that," she said, acknowledging her parents' long and happy marriage as a positive example.

Rhimes explained that she once viewed marriage as threatening to her identity, fearing it would overshadow her successful career. However, now feeling "very comfortable" with her accomplishments, she has overcome that fear.

"I'm completely comfortable with the idea that like I can meet somebody and spend the rest of my life [with] them because I'm not worried that who I am is gonna be taken away from me," she concluded, signaling a newfound openness to lifelong partnership.
