Etihad and Qatar Airways Ease Loyalty Rules Amid Iran War Flight Disruptions
Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways have implemented significant adjustments to their respective loyalty programmes as air travel across the Middle East experiences a sharp decline following the outbreak of the Iran-US war. The changes are designed to provide greater flexibility for frequent flyers whose travel plans have been severely disrupted by the ongoing conflict and subsequent airspace closures.
Etihad Guest Programme Modifications
Effective from 18 March, Etihad Guest – the official loyalty and frequent flyer programme for Etihad Airways – has reduced its qualification threshold by a substantial 25 per cent across all membership tiers. This strategic adjustment means that members can now retain or upgrade their current status with significantly fewer qualifying miles than usual.
Tier miles, which are earned on all Etihad flights and can be redeemed for journeys, hotel stays, and holiday packages, will now be subject to these more lenient requirements. The reduced thresholds will automatically apply to all Etihad Guest members and will remain in effect until 31 March 2027.
Natalie Wilson of Etihad Airways stated on Saturday 21 March 2026: "The change recognises that many members have experienced disruptions to their travel plans in recent weeks and provides greater flexibility for members working towards retaining or upgrading their tier status." She further emphasised that the adjustment offers greater flexibility for those whose travel arrangements may have been affected.
Qatar Airways Privilege Club Adjustments
Similarly, Qatar Airways has announced modifications for its Privilege Club members. The Qatar Airways Privilege Club, which utilises Avios points for redeeming flights, cabin upgrades, and hotel accommodations, is now implementing tier status extensions for all members whose status was due for renewal and may have been impacted during this turbulent period.
In an email communication to members, the carrier explained that these extensions will allow loyal customers to "continue enjoying the benefits they love" despite the operational challenges. This move has been widely reported by international news outlets including Euronews, highlighting the airline's commitment to supporting its customer base during these difficult times.
Background of Flight Disruptions
The aviation sector across the Middle East has faced unprecedented challenges since the US-Israeli attack on Iran began, which triggered retaliatory actions from Tehran against infrastructure in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait. These hostilities have resulted in intermittent airspace closures throughout the region, creating significant operational hurdles for airlines.
According to the latest figures from aviation analyst Cirium, both carriers are currently operating at dramatically reduced capacity. Etihad Airways is managing just 25 per cent of its normal service, while Qatar Airways is operating a mere 15 per cent of its usual flight schedule.
Additional Support Measures
Beyond the loyalty programme adjustments, both airlines have introduced additional support measures for affected travellers. Etihad Airways is now offering free cancellation for bookings made for travel up to March 2027, providing customers with greater peace of mind amid the uncertainty.
Qatar Airways has issued a statement reassuring passengers: "Plan your travels again with limited flights resuming. We want you to know that we are doing our utmost to support you with your journey, and to reunite you with your family and loved ones." This commitment underscores the airlines' efforts to maintain customer relationships despite the severe operational constraints.
The broader aviation industry continues to monitor the situation closely, with numerous airlines cancelling flights to the Middle East as the Iran crisis persists. These loyalty programme adjustments represent a strategic response to maintain customer loyalty during a period of unprecedented disruption to regional air travel.
