Shenae Grimes Opens Up About Leaving Acting for Fashion Entrepreneurship
Former noughties television star Shenae Grimes has candidly discussed her decision to step away from the acting spotlight and pursue a career in fashion. In a heartfelt Instagram post, the 36-year-old reflected on her journey from teen idol to business owner, revealing the personal and professional reasons behind her significant career pivot.
From Teen Star to Fashion Entrepreneur
Shenae Grimes first captured public attention as a teenager, making her acting debut at just 15 years old on the beloved Canadian series Degrassi: The Next Generation. She portrayed Darcy Edwards for four years until 2008, quickly establishing herself as a rising talent. That same year, she transitioned to the American television landscape, joining the cast of the CW's 90210 as Annie Wilson.
Her role alongside actors including Rob Estes, Tristan Wilds, and AnnaLynne McCord solidified her status as a Hollywood starlet throughout the show's five-season run. However, after 90210 concluded in 2013, Grimes found herself struggling to secure substantial acting roles, appearing primarily in television movies in subsequent years.
The Turning Point and New Direction
In 2014, Grimes launched her clothing brand Two Halves, which gradually evolved into her primary professional focus. She recently shared a video of herself packing orders for the business, accompanied by a lengthy caption addressing frequent questions about her departure from acting.
"Here's the thing about acting in two hit TV shows from the age of 13 to 23... You wake up one day and realize you are living the dream of your 11-year-old self," Grimes wrote. "But after a decade of working 16-hour days, navigating tumultuous office politics behind the scenes during formative years, and living under a microscopic public eye during a very harmful era in media... it doesn't feel like YOUR dream anymore."
Finding Fulfillment Beyond the Camera
Grimes acknowledged that she misses certain aspects of performing, particularly the emotional connection with audiences through fictional characters. However, she emphasized that building her own business has provided deeper satisfaction.
"The creative, intellectual and pure soul fulfillment I get from creating my own content, building my own businesses, turning my own ideas into tangible goods and connecting with an audience I've built through sharing my own story is 100 percent what fulfills the dreams of the grown woman I am today," she explained.
The mother of two, who shares children with husband Josh Beech, admitted that running a clothing brand lacks the glamour of Hollywood but represents a meaningful evolution. "One of the perks of getting older and making peace with who you are is the acceptance and belief that you define success for yourself," she noted, adding that she hopes to demonstrate to her children that authenticity and hard work make anything possible.
Leaving the Door Open for Future Projects
While fully committed to her fashion venture, Grimes hasn't ruled out a return to acting entirely. She expressed interest in potentially dabbling in performances again as her children grow older and more independent.
"What you view as 'wasted talent' is me choosing to tap into potential I feel called to explore while I'm still here," she concluded. "Instead of wasting time pursuing a dream with immense collateral damage that simply isn't mine anymore. Perspective's a funny thing, isn't it?"
Beyond her iconic roles on Degrassi and 90210, Grimes' acting credits include television movies like Picture This and True Confessions of a Hollywood Starlet, a cameo in Scream 4, and a starring role in the Canadian drama The Detail in 2018.
