Putin Defies US Peace Demands with Massive 500-Bomb Ukraine Assault

Russian President Vladimir Putin has defiantly ignored urgent US calls for peace, ordering a devastating overnight attack on Ukraine involving nearly 500 bombs and drones. This aggressive move comes despite staggering Russian troop losses and ongoing international pressure to end the conflict.

Widespread Destruction Across Multiple Regions

The coordinated assault involved at least 420 deadly drones alongside dozens of missiles, including anti-ship, ballistic, and cruise weapons. Ukrainian officials reported that many of these projectiles targeted Kyiv and seven other regions, causing significant damage to critical infrastructure and residential buildings.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed fury at the latest aggression, stating: "Russia again fought against critical infrastructure and ordinary residential buildings." While Ukraine's air force managed to intercept hundreds of drones and 32 missiles, the remaining weapons caused widespread destruction upon impact.

Strategic Bombers Unleash Cruise Missiles

The attack began around 4:00 a.m. local time with explosions rocking Ukraine's capital as air defense systems engaged incoming missiles. Russian Tu-95MS and Tu-160 strategic bombers took off to fire cruise missiles, which entered Ukrainian airspace by 5:25 a.m., primarily heading toward Kyiv.

Further strikes were anticipated throughout the day as Russian bombers prepared to unleash additional ordnance. In Kharkiv, large-scale attacks involved 17 drones and two missiles hitting targets across the community. Zaporizhzhia also suffered major attacks, with an eight-year-old boy among eight people injured by incoming missiles.

Kremlin Dampens Peace Talk Hopes

The assault occurred just hours before scheduled talks between Ukrainian officials and US envoy Steve Witkoff. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov questioned the value of holding a potential March summit between Ukraine and Russia, citing Ukraine's refusal to negotiate on territorial issues.

When asked about Witkoff's comments regarding potential peace talks, Peskov responded: "whether there's any point in holding a summit" given Ukraine's stance on territorial negotiations. He emphasized that territorial issues remain "complex" and require "very meticulous work at the expert level" before any leader-level meeting could occur.

Stalemate Over Donbas Territory

More than a year into Trump-led peace efforts, a final agreement appears increasingly unlikely as Moscow demands Ukraine surrender the entire Donbas region. Kyiv currently controls approximately a quarter of Donetsk Oblast and maintains footholds in Luhansk Oblast—the two eastern regions comprising Donbas.

Peskov reiterated Putin's controversial offer to meet President Zelensky in Moscow, a proposal Ukraine has already rejected. Zelensky has previously expressed willingness to meet his Russian counterpart on neutral ground to advance negotiations, but the Kremlin has dismissed this suggestion.

Devastating Human and Material Costs

This latest attack continues Russia's months-long campaign targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure, leaving thousands of civilians struggling to survive in temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius. Zelensky emphasized the ongoing need for air defense missiles, stating: "The cold has not fully passed, and air defense missiles are needed every day while Russia continues trying to destroy our energy system."

The war has exacted a horrific toll on Russian forces, with over a million troops killed or injured, tens of thousands of tanks and armored vehicles destroyed, and hundreds of warplanes and helicopters lost. Despite these staggering losses and being beaten back in some areas, Moscow's forces continue their assaults on Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure.
