Married At First Sight Relationship Expert Mel Schilling Passes Away at 54
The entertainment world is in mourning following the tragic death of Mel Schilling, the beloved relationship expert from Married At First Sight, at the age of 54. Her husband, Gareth, confirmed the heartbreaking news in a solemn Instagram post on Tuesday, revealing that Mel passed away peacefully surrounded by love after a courageous battle with colon cancer.
Outpouring of Grief from MAFS Cast and Colleagues
Tristan Black, who appeared on season 11 of the series in 2024, led the tributes, describing Mel as his rock during filming. "It was always nerve-racking to come and sit on the couch, and talking about the issues you dealt with for the week. But Mel always made me feel at ease," Black told Daily Mail. "She was kind, caring and compassionate. She always wanted to see the best in every single one of the people that were doing the experiment." He added that her guidance helped him build confidence, calling her an amazing human being and noting that heaven gained a new angel.
The Instagram announcement was flooded with condolences from former MAFS stars, including:
- Jo McPharlin: "Absolutely incredibly heartbreaking to read this. All my love and strength to you and the extended family. She was one in a million."

Australian celebrities such as Casey Donovan, David Campbell, and Deborah Knight also extended their sympathies, with Deborah writing, "Mel was divine and lives on in Maddie. I’m so sorry for you both and all who loved her."
Husband Gareth's Heartbreaking Announcement
In his emotional Instagram post, Gareth shared intimate details of Mel's final moments. "In her final moments, when I thought cancer had taken away her ability to speak, she ushered me closer and whispered a message for Maddie and me that will sustain me for the rest of my life," he wrote. He praised Mel as an incredible mum, role model, and soulmate, highlighting her strength through two years of chemotherapy while continuing to film MAFS without complaint.
Gareth expressed gratitude to the MAFS family, including John, Alessandra, Charlene, Roxy, and Sophie, as well as industry colleagues, and urged others to honour Mel by living life to the full and loving well. "I had 15 wonderful years with my soulmate, and it was the privilege of my life to be by her side," he concluded.
Nine Network's Tribute and Mel's Cancer Battle
Michael Healy, Nine's Executive Director, issued a statement expressing deep sadness, calling Mel a wonderful colleague and friend with a gift for connecting people. "She had a gift for connecting with people and helping them navigate life's challenges. For years, she guided us through the complexities of the human heart with wisdom, honesty, and kindness," Healy said.
Mel was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2023 after a 5 cm tumour was discovered. She underwent surgery and 16 rounds of chemotherapy over two years while filming. In a recent Instagram post, she revealed that the cancer had metastasised to her lungs in 2024 and spread to her brain over Christmas, leading to blinding headaches and numbness. Despite plans for a clinical trial, doctors confirmed there was nothing further they could do.
In her statement, Mel wrote, "My light is starting to fade - and quickly. But I am still here, still fighting, and surrounded by the most incredible love." She encouraged others to get health issues checked early, sharing a photo with her husband Gareth and daughter Madison, 10. Last month, she announced she was stepping away from the Australian MAFS series after starring since season two, leaving a legacy of compassion and resilience in the reality TV community.
