Three Arrested After Arson Attack on Czech Drone Warehouse Supplying Ukraine
Three individuals have been apprehended in connection with a devastating fire that destroyed a warehouse belonging to a company supplying autonomous drones to Ukraine. The incident, which occurred in the Czech Republic, is being treated as suspected arson with potential links to terrorism, according to police authorities.
Investigation and Arrests
A spokesperson for the police confirmed that the fire is under investigation as a suspected arson attack with terrorist connections. Two of the suspects were arrested on Czech territory, while the third was detained in neighboring Slovakia. Czech authorities are now actively seeking the extradition of the suspect held in Slovakia to face charges in the Czech Republic.
The suspects, identified as Czech and US nationals, are facing serious charges including terrorist attack and participation in a terrorist group. Police have provided limited details about the individuals but emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing. "We continue to work intensively to apprehend the remaining suspects, also in cooperation with foreign partners," a police statement noted.
Details of the Incident
The fire broke out in an industrial zone in the city of Pardubice, located approximately 100 kilometers (60 miles) east of Prague. The blaze completely destroyed the warehouse building but fortunately caused no injuries. Firefighters successfully extinguished the fire, and police assured the public that there was no ongoing danger.
LPP Holding, the company that owned the warehouse, confirmed the fire in one of its buildings and stated it is fully cooperating with the investigation. The company develops and manufactures products for both civilian and military applications, including autonomous drone technologies used by Ukraine's armed forces in their defense against the Russian invasion.
Political and Security Context
Interior Minister Lubomír Metnar indicated that the incident may be related to a terrorist attack, with the Czech side sharing investigation details with international partners. Top police officer Martin Vondrášek stated that police are operating under the assumption that the fire was deliberately set.
This attack comes amid a shifting political landscape in the Czech Republic. Unlike the previous pro-Western government, the current administration led by populist billionaire Andrej Babiš has rejected financial aid for Ukraine and guarantees for European Union loans to support the country. This stance aligns the Czech Republic with leaders like Viktor Orbán of Hungary and Robert Fico of Slovakia, who have opposed EU backing for Ukraine. Despite this political position, popular support for Ukraine within the Czech Republic remains notably high.
Company Background and Security Measures
LPP Holding had previously announced plans to establish a center in Pardubice for developing and producing drones, as well as training personnel in collaboration with Israeli military technology firm Elbit Systems. However, following the attack, the company revealed that this joint venture never materialized. In response to the incident, arms manufacturers across the country have since enhanced their security protocols.
Importantly, LPP Holding clarified that no arms were actually produced in the building that was attacked. The warehouse primarily served as a storage and development facility for drone technologies, highlighting the targeted nature of the assault on supplies destined for Ukraine's defense efforts.
