A Lancaster housewife has triumphed as the new Mastermind champion following a heart-stopping tie-break on Monday, securing victory by the narrowest of margins in a historic moment for the long-running quiz programme.
A Historic Victory in a Tense Final
Diane Howe, who works as a carer, clinched the title with 28 points, edging out fellow finalist Lorna Frankel by a single point after an extraordinary tie-break round. This marked only the second time such a decider has occurred since Mastermind first aired on British television in 1972, highlighting the intense competition and high stakes of this year's final.
Delight and Relief for the Champion
A visibly elated Diane described her trophy as 'very heavy' but expressed overwhelming joy at her achievement. 'It's just an amazing feeling. I'm so happy... and relieved,' she said, reflecting on the gruelling contest. Her specialist subject was American astronaut Jim Lovell, a choice inspired by her lifelong passion for science fiction and the film Apollo 13.
'He is an amazing man to do what he did and stay calm - the way he commanded that situation was amazing,' Diane remarked, drawing parallels between Lovell's composure and her own performance under pressure.
From Early Setback to Ultimate Success
This victory was particularly sweet for Diane, as it was her second attempt on the show. She previously appeared in 2019 but did not progress beyond the first round. That experience, she revealed, 'really spurred me on to have another go and see what I could do.' Her perseverance paid off spectacularly, culminating in a win that she described as meaning 'everything.'
'Watching Mastermind from an early age and seeing all the grand finalists and the winners, and to have this [trophy] in my hands, it’s amazing,' she added, emphasising the personal significance of her triumph.
Secrets to Success and Celebrity Support
Appearing on BBC Breakfast after her win, Diane shared her strategy for mastering the quiz. 'It's really about focusing. If you get something wrong, you've just got to say, that's wrong, just pass and carry on. You can't get bogged down in something you’ve got wrong, it's really tunnel vision,' she advised.
For aspiring contestants, she recommended thorough preparation: 'Read a couple of really good sources, and look on the internet for extra material, just really read, re-read, make notes, condense notes, and then try and question spot.'
Host's Praise and Astronaut's Encouragement
Mastermind host Clive Myrie, who joined via video link, expressed astonishment at the finale's closeness. 'I ask something like 1,300-1,500 questions a series, and it boiled down to two Roman roads meeting in Lincoln, that’s unbelievable! And to win by one point is incredible,' he said.
He also praised Diane's composure, noting, 'The thing about Diane is, she's just so cool. Butter would not melt in her mouth. She just ambled onto the set, sat in the chair, didn't betray a single set of nerves, it was incredible, and that is the key about Mastermind.'
Adding to the excitement, Diane received a special message from British astronaut Tim Peake, who wished her 'good luck and ad astra (to the stars)' after she scored 12 points on her specialist subject. This gesture brought her closer to her spacefaring hero and underscored the inspirational nature of her achievement.
A Legacy of Intellectual Excellence
Diane's victory not only cements her place in Mastermind history but also serves as a testament to the show's enduring appeal and the dedication of its contestants. Her journey from early elimination to champion demonstrates the power of resilience and focused preparation.
Mastermind continues to be available for streaming on BBC iPlayer, allowing fans to relive this thrilling final and other episodes of the iconic quiz series.
