King Charles Reaffirms UK's Unwavering Support for Ukraine on Partnership Anniversary
King Charles: 'We stand with you' Ukraine

King Charles has issued a powerful statement of solidarity with Ukraine, reinforcing the United Kingdom's unwavering commitment as the nation endures the ongoing Russian invasion.

A Message of Solidarity at a Time of Anguish

In a written message marking the first anniversary of the 100-Year Partnership between the UK and Ukraine, the monarch expressed his profound hope for a future of peace. His comments come as the world approaches the sombre milestone of the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion at the end of February.

The King said: "As we also look ahead to the fourth anniversary of the full-scale invasion of your beloved country - a time of great anguish, I know, for many families across Ukraine and the world - my wife and I continue to keep you all in our heartfelt thoughts and prayers."

He added: "I wish, above all, to convey my profound hope that Ukraine can achieve a just and lasting peace that safeguards its security, sovereignty and prosperity, in a way that Ukrainians deserve. We stand with you."

Royal and Governmental Support in Action

The monarch's public backing for Ukraine has been consistent since the early days of the conflict. He has met numerous Ukrainians who have sought sanctuary in the UK and featured the Songs for Ukraine Chorus in his recent Christmas Day broadcast.

King Charles has also personally met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, offering his support. This backing came even after President Zelenskyy faced a notable reprimand from former US President Donald Trump in the Oval Office last year.

Concurrently, the UK government is engaging at a high level, with Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy reportedly travelling to Ukraine for a forum of the centenary partnership to discuss future cooperation.

The Foundations of the 100-Year Partnership

The landmark UK-Ukraine partnership, established through a treaty and political declaration, is built on several key pillars designed to deepen ties between the two nations.

Key areas of collaboration include:

  • Military and maritime security cooperation.
  • Joint efforts in healthcare and tackling disease.
  • Advancements in agricultural technology and the space industry.
  • Strengthened cultural exchanges and educational classroom projects.

In his message, King Charles highlighted these bonds, stating: "As we celebrate the first anniversary of the 100-Year Partnership... I do pray that the flourishing bonds between our two countries may bring some hope and moral support at this most difficult time."

A Unified Royal Front

The wider Royal Family has consistently demonstrated its support. The Prince and Princess of Wales have visited charities aiding refugees and made public statements. During a 2022 visit to the Ukrainian Cultural Centre in London, Prince William told volunteers: "we stand behind you."

Furthermore, Prince William travelled to Estonia last year to visit British troops and listen to first-hand accounts from Ukrainian refugee children, praising their "strong" spirit.

King Charles concluded his message by commending the Ukrainian people, saying: "Ukraine's most valiant strength in the face of such appalling hardship and pain is an extraordinary example to the world, and I am constantly impressed by the sheer bravery, courage and resilience shown by the Ukrainian people."
