Kim Jong Un's Teenage Daughter Takes Control of Anti-Drone Tank in Military Exercise

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his teenage daughter have been photographed together during a significant military training drill, where the young girl was seen driving a new type of tank designed to counter drones and anti-tank missiles. This appearance intensifies ongoing speculation that she is being groomed as her father's potential successor in the secretive regime.

State Media Reports on Advanced Tank Demonstration

According to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim supervised the drill on Friday, which showcased the tank's superior offensive and defensive capabilities. He reportedly urged military officials to complete war preparations, emphasising the importance of readiness. Footage and photographs released by Pyongyang depict the girl peering from the driver's hatch of a moving, olive green tank, while Kim smiled from atop the vehicle alongside three soldiers.

Analysts suggest this marks her first public activity where she was clearly at the controls of an armoured vehicle. However, experts note that modern tanks are not technically complex to operate, especially at low speeds. Lee Illwoo, an expert with the Korea Defense Network in South Korea, commented: "She only drove straight at a low speed. It's also easy to drive modern tanks, and I think it was easier for her to drive as she was on flat ground."

Escalating Public Appearances Fuel Succession Theories

The girl, reportedly named Kim Ju Ae and aged about 13, has accompanied her father to numerous high-profile military and state events since late 2022. North Korean state media has referred to her as Kim Jong Un's "most beloved" or "respected" child, publishing extensive footage and photos highlighting their closeness. Recent activities include:

  • Firing pistols during a visit to a light munitions factory.
  • Watching a live-fire test of multiple rocket launch systems.
  • Traveling to Beijing with her father in September.
  • Kissing him on the cheek during New Year's Day celebrations.

South Korea's spy agency assessed last month that Kim Jong Un was close to designating her as his heir. However, some experts disagree, citing Kim's relatively young age and the extremely male-dominated nature of North Korea's power hierarchy as potential barriers to such a succession plan.

Regional Tensions Amid Military Exercises

The North Korean training drill occurred as the United States and South Korea were engaged in their annual military exercises, which North Korea views as an invasion rehearsal. The US and South Korea concluded their 11-day computer-simulated command post exercise on Thursday, but field training continues. This context adds a layer of geopolitical tension to the domestic display of military prowess and familial involvement in North Korea's defence strategies.

The combination of Kim Ju Ae's increasing visibility in military settings and the regime's emphasis on advanced weaponry underscores the ongoing consolidation of power within the Kim dynasty, while raising questions about future leadership in one of the world's most isolated nations.
