Zelensky Alleges Putin Seeks Belarusian Bases for Long-Range Attack Drones
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a stark warning that Russian President Vladimir Putin intends to establish four ground control stations in Belarus to host long-range attack drones. Citing intelligence from Ukraine's military service, Zelensky declared, "There will be responses to this. And they will be felt." This development marks a significant escalation in Belarus's involvement, a nation that has historically been a reluctant but compliant ally of Moscow.
Belarus Drawn Deeper into the Conflict
Belarus, while permitting Russian troop movements and hosting nuclear-capable missiles since the invasion's outset in February 2022, has largely avoided direct combat. Zelensky emphasized that the country is becoming increasingly entangled in the war as it enters its fifth year. The proposed drone bases would represent a more active military role, potentially extending Russia's reach and capabilities in the region.
Heavy Russian Casualties Reported Amid Renewed Offensive
Concurrently, Ukrainian military officials report that Russian forces have suffered devastating losses. General Oleksandr Syrskyi stated that over 6,000 Russian soldiers were killed or wounded in just four days of "intensive assault operations" as Moscow attempted a renewed push to capture Ukrainian territory. Syrskyi described the Russian operations as exerting "colossal pressure," but noted that Ukrainian defenses largely repelled the offensive, with enemy forces conducting 619 assault actions during the period.
UN Official Decries Escalating Violence
Rosemary DiCarlo, the UN's head of political and peacebuilding affairs, highlighted the conflict's grim toll, stating the violence is "worse than ever" after more than four years. She confirmed at least 15,364 civilian deaths, including 775 children, and over 42,000 injuries, with actual figures likely higher. DiCarlo reported a 45% increase in civilian casualties in February compared to last year, reiterating the UN's call for an immediate ceasefire to end the "death, destruction and despair."
Zelensky Accuses Russia of Intelligence Sharing with Iran
In a separate allegation, Zelensky claimed Ukraine possesses "irrefutable evidence" that Russia is providing intelligence to Iran, a move he warned prolongs conflicts in the Middle East and destabilizes global markets. He asserted that Russia utilizes its own signals and electronic intelligence capabilities, along with data from regional partners, to support Tehran. The Kremlin has previously denied similar reports as "fake news."
Ukrainian Diplomat Urges Strikes on Russian Drone Production
Andriy Melnyk, Ukraine's permanent representative to the UN, argued that Russia's shipment of modernised Iranian-designed Shahed drones to Iran makes Russian drone production sites legitimate military targets. He urged Western allies to equip Ukraine with weapons capable of striking these facilities, citing the interconnected nature of regional crises and Russia's imperialistic ambitions.
Energy Crisis Drives Ukraine to Seek Mozambican Gas
Facing severe energy shortages due to relentless Russian attacks on infrastructure, Ukraine is exploring liquefied natural gas imports from Mozambique. Zelensky confirmed discussions, noting Ukraine's interest in energy supplies and Mozambique's potential interest in Ukrainian security technologies to counter insurgency threats. Prior to the invasion, Ukraine met most gas needs domestically, but strikes have halved output, intensifying the crisis.
Recent Military Actions and Broader Implications
Ukrainian forces recently destroyed two Russian Buk air defense systems in Bryansk Oblast via drone attacks. As the war persists, Zelensky's warnings underscore the expanding geopolitical dimensions, from Belarusian involvement to Middle Eastern intelligence sharing, highlighting the conflict's far-reaching impact on regional and international security.
