Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis Bring 'Scarpetta' to Prime Video

Oscar winners Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis have teamed up to adapt Patricia Cornwell's bestselling 'Scarpetta' book series for television. The new mystery crime series, titled 'Scarpetta,' premieres on Prime Video on March 11, with both stars serving as co-executive producers and lead actors.

From Oscars Meeting to Co-Bosses

The collaboration began unexpectedly at the 2021 Oscars, where Kidman approached Curtis's table to introduce herself. Despite decades in similar Hollywood circles, they had never met. Months later, when Kidman learned Curtis was spearheading the 'Scarpetta' adaptation, she eagerly joined the project.

"I guarantee you when I was literally hanging under a helicopter above the Florida Keys, I did not imagine I'd be sitting in New York City that many years later with Nicole Kidman," Curtis remarked, referencing her iconic stunt in 'True Lies.' "Not only being co-bosses on a show, but then also playing her slutty sister. I was not imagining that as my future."

Kidman's Role and Preparation

Kidman, 58, portrays the titular character Dr. Kay Scarpetta, a forensic pathologist who returns to Virginia and encounters murders reminiscent of a case that launched her career thirty years earlier. To prepare, Kidman spent time with a medical examiner in Tennessee, learning to handle a scalpel and identify organs.

"My sister and my mother were obsessed with the novels, so I would read them," said Kidman, an Emmy winner. "When I mentioned it to my sister, she was like, 'Well, I mean, that's it. You have to do it.'" She noted that earlier attempts to adapt the series with stars like Demi Moore or Angelina Jolie had stalled, but the timing finally felt right.

Cast and Creative Team

Curtis plays Scarpetta's free-spirited sister Dorothy, a role she took on at Kidman's request. The eight-episode season is led by showrunner Liz Sarnoff, known for 'Lost' and 'Barry.' The cast includes:

  • Emmy winner Bobby Cannavale as Pete Marino, Kay's ex-partner and Dorothy's husband
  • Simon Baker from 'The Mentalist' as FBI profiler Benton Wesley, Scarpetta's husband
  • Oscar winner Ariana DeBose as Dorothy's tech-savvy daughter Lucy, primarily raised by Kay

A companion storyline set in the 1990s features Rosy McEwen as a younger Scarpetta, with Jake Cannavale and Hunter Parrish playing younger versions of Marino and Wesley, respectively.

Personal Connections and Grief Themes

DeBose, who presented Curtis with her Oscar for 'Everything Everywhere All at Once,' was offered the role via a personal text from Curtis. Her character Lucy grieves her dead wife by seeking comfort in an AI replica, a poignant storyline that resonated with DeBose after her own mother died five months post-filming.

"I'm more clear now than I was when I was actually shooting this series that grief manifests in very different ways," said the 35-year-old actor.

Cornwell's Involvement and Prime Video's Bet

Patricia Cornwell, author of the 'Scarpetta' series with over 120 million copies sold worldwide, was deeply involved in the adaptation. "Dream come true—literally," said Cornwell, 69, who is currently writing the 30th book. She praised Kidman and Curtis for uncovering new layers in her characters.

Prime Video, successful with adaptations like 'Reacher' and 'Jack Ryan,' is betting 'Scarpetta' will be its next hit. The series has already been renewed for a second season.

Curtis's Hollywood Vision and Future Plans

Produced through Curtis's company Comet Pictures, the series aims to inspire young women in the industry. "I hope that they see people—women—doing all these different jobs," Curtis said, recalling how she initiated the project by contacting Blumhouse Television founder Jason Blum.

Curtis, 67, has long stated she will leave acting on her own terms before Hollywood moves on. "I want to be able to walk away with dignity and pride in my work," she explained. Kidman humorously dismissed this, saying, "Pay no attention to her. We're not listening to that because we're asking you to stay forever."
