Karen Hauer has spoken for the first time about her departure from Strictly Come Dancing after 14 years, describing the decision as 'emotional' but necessary for her personal growth. The professional dancer, 44, was the longest-serving female pro on the show and kept her exit secret from everyone except her closest friends.
In an exclusive interview, Hauer said she feared her fellow professionals would try to persuade her to stay, so she told no one. 'I didn’t say anything because I know it would have been hard for them to digest,' she explained. 'I kept it within my tightest circle.' The announcement in March prompted an outpouring of support from fans and colleagues.
Hauer’s exit is part of a major shake-up for the 2026 series, with hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman stepping down and several other pros leaving, including Gorka Márquez, Nadiya Bychkova, Luba Mushtuk and Michelle Tsiakkas. Emma Willis, Josh Widdicombe and Johannes Radebe will take over as hosts.
Reflecting on the changes, Hauer said she believes Strictly will continue to evolve and improve. 'Even before I was on the show, when we saw Bruce Forsyth leave and then Len Goodman, it’s always got bigger and better,' she said. 'Now, there’s new energy coming in.' She added that she will miss the crew and her fellow dancers, whom she described as 'my kids'.
Hauer is now preparing for a UK tour of the comedy play Stepping Out, in which she will play dance teacher Mavis. The role, she said, feels tailor-made after her Strictly experience. 'It just fell into my lap at exactly the right time,' she said. 'The fact that Mavis is a dance teacher, dealing with so many different personalities and stories just resonated with me so much.'
