John Connors: Faith and Carnivore Diet Fuel Personal Transformation

John Connors Credits Renewed Faith and Carnivore Lifestyle for Life-Changing Turnaround

Walking the red carpet at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York earlier this year, John Connors appeared every inch the transformed movie star. The Irish actor, writer, and director, present for Jim Sheridan's film Re-Creation, looked noticeably leaner, sharper, and more comfortable in his own skin than in previous public appearances. He acknowledges this visible change with a laugh, describing it as a kind of glow-up and confessing he feels like a completely new man.

A Journey Rooted in Grief and Spiritual Rediscovery

Connors attributes his dramatic personal shift to two fundamental changes: the adoption of a fasting and carnivore diet to maintain focus and physical trimness, and, more significantly, the profound reignition of his Catholic faith. He explains that finding peace had eluded him throughout his entire life until this point. The death of his mother, Kathleen, in August 2023, became the catalyst for his return to the prayers and sacraments of his childhood.

'I understand how this sounds to people who don't share my thinking, but I found God a year ago, I found Jesus and surrendered to him,' says Connors, who grew up in Darndale, Dublin. 'I started partaking in a sacramental life and going back to Church. When I did that, everything changed for me.'

He specifically cites overcoming a 15-year struggle with gluttony through prayer, daily rosary recitation, and fasting, which granted him the temperance he sought. This spiritual foundation provided the discipline needed to sustain his new carnivore lifestyle, something he lacked after quitting his earlier career as a champion boxer.

Professional Momentum and Personal Joy

As the emotional weight lifted, physical weight followed, though Connors hasn't measured the exact loss, simply stating he feels better than ever. This shedding of baggage triggered a positive chain reaction. He found love with Belfast actress Danielle Magennis, star of Channel 4's Say Nothing, and experienced a surge in work offers.

His career continues on an upward trajectory with recent roles in Guy Ritchie's Netflix series The Gentlemen and a lead in Crazy Love, which earned him the Seymour Cassel Award for Outstanding Performance. He also appears in the 2025 thriller Re-Creation and has a cameo in the new Irish comedy drama Horseshoe.

Connors and Magennis are planning a wedding and a move to Belfast next year, connecting him to his mother's roots. He recently performed his self-penned play, Ireland's Call, in the city to great acclaim.

Navigating Cynicism and Championing Faith in a Secular World

Connors openly acknowledges facing cynicism and opposition for his renewed religious convictions, particularly within his industry where some consider his views 'crazy.' He finds this ironic, noting that when he was engaged in self-destructive behavior, he was perceived as sane.

'Being crazy for Christ, well, I can't think of anything better,' he states. His approach is not about being holier-than-thou but about leading by example and making genuine connections. He expresses sadness at Ireland's increasing secularism, believing the world lacks faith, leading people to seek temporary solace elsewhere.

While he condemns the horrific scandals within the Church, he remains steadfast in his practice, arguing that the failings of individuals should not negate the core message. 'Jesus didn't say that the Church wouldn't have problems... but he did say evil will not prevail,' he reflects.

Looking Ahead with Peace and Purpose

As Christmas approaches, Connors reflects on a positive year and anticipates a busy 2026 filled with his wedding, move, and upcoming film projects like Lost City and Lemonade. He believes Ireland is experiencing a cultural renaissance, with Irish storytellers gaining global recognition.

Ultimately, his transformation is summed up not merely as happiness, but as something deeper. 'It's more than being happy,' he explains. 'It's so much deeper than that. I've found peace. I never had that my whole life, but I have it now.' His journey from grief and self-destruction to spiritual peace and professional vitality stands as a testament to his personal and faith-driven revival.
