Jane McDonald Breaks Down in Tears Over Showbiz Struggles in Nashville Series

Singer and presenter Jane McDonald, 63, broke down in tears as she candidly discussed the immense challenges of the showbusiness industry, describing it as "very, very hard" and revealing she has always felt like the "underdog." This emotional moment was captured in her new Channel 5 series, Jane McDonald in Nashville, which follows her journey to the heart of country music.

Recording a Dream Album in Iconic Studio

In the series, Jane travels to Nashville to record her latest album, Living the Dream, released in March with 13 new tracks. The first episode features her visit to the renowned Blackbird Studio, where she worked with a team of musicians to bring her country-inspired songs to life. This studio has hosted legendary artists such as Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Mariah Carey, and John Mayer, adding to the significance of Jane's experience.

She shared with viewers: "I'm going to let you into a little secret. I've come to Nashville because I was making a new album, and when I started writing, I realised there was a country feel. For years, people, including my dad, told me I should be a country singer, but I never gave it much thought until now. It's taken me 27 years to finally do what I maybe should have been doing all along."

Emotional Reflections on a Tough Career

During the recording process, Jane admitted to feeling nervous as the songs came together. Later, she became tearful, explaining: "It's blown my mind a little bit really. When I started here, I thought, 'What am I doing?' I've always felt my heart is in country music because I'm a storyteller. All my life, I've sort of been the underdog. Never give up—if I've learned anything from being in Nashville, it's that I just never gave up. I fought all the way through. It's been a struggle. I'm not going to lie. This industry is hard—very, very hard."

Past Rejections and Personal Revelations

Jane also opened up about past setbacks, including a brutal rejection from the pop group Bucks Fizz early in her career due to her hair color. She recounted: "I went for an audition and got down to the last ten, but they said, 'No, we want a blonde.' I'd have loved to join, but I've done alright since." This rejection highlights the superficial challenges she faced in the entertainment world.

In addition, Jane reflected on her personal life, confessing she was never in love with her ex-husband Henrik Brixen, whom she was married to for eight years. She described him as a "nice guy" but admitted their marriage was on the brink during her Las Vegas shows in 2001. Following their split in 2003, she rekindled a relationship with her teenage sweetheart Eddie Rothe, who sadly died of lung cancer in 2021.

Dealing with Grief and Moving Forward

Four years after Eddie's death, Jane shared that grief remains a constant companion, but she focuses on bringing joy into her life to balance it. She told Bella Magazine: "There's not a day goes by that I don't think of him. Grief stays with you all the time, but you have to sit it beside joy. I'm just about level now." She practices a daily mantra to stay positive and continue her career with resilience.

Jane McDonald in Nashville continues to air on Channel 5, offering viewers an intimate look at her musical journey and personal reflections. Through her tears and triumphs, Jane's story serves as a testament to perseverance in a demanding industry.
