Heated Rivalry Stars Launch Furious Attack on Toxic Fanbase Over Online Abuse
Two of the biggest stars from the hit series Heated Rivalry have launched a blistering attack against a segment of the show's fanbase, condemning what they describe as racist, homophobic, and misogynistic abuse circulating online. Hudson Williams, who portrays lead character Shane Hollander, and Francois Arnaud, who plays Scott Hunter, took to social media this week to pen a furious joint statement addressing viewers who have not supported the inclusive message of the popular gay ice hockey drama.
Stars Issue Stark Warning to Toxic Fans
In a powerful message shared on their Instagram stories, the actors made their position unequivocally clear. "Don't call yourself a fan if you share racist/homophobic/biphobic/misogynistic/ageist/ableist/parasocial/bigoted comments of any kind," they wrote. "None of us need your hateful 'love' - we all respect and support and love each other and are on the same side. If you can't accept that, gtfoh (get the f**k out of here)."
The series, which tells the story of rival ice hockey players Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie) and Shane Hollander (Williams) navigating a complex romance off the ice, has soared in global viewership since its release. However, the intense fan engagement has unfortunately spawned a toxic undercurrent that the cast felt compelled to address directly.
Fan Reaction and Support for the Cast
When the stars' statements were shared on platforms like Reddit, many fans rushed to praise Williams and Arnaud for their stance, while also criticising those engaging in abusive behaviour. One supporter noted, "I agree as an outsider this fandom has speed-ran every single toxic fandom behavior you can think of. Kind of crazy actually..." Another added, "It is very interesting seeing the amount of homophobia and biphobia fans of this series engage in..."
Further comments highlighted the rapid rise of the cast from relative unknowns to facing intense scrutiny. "The two leads (and even Francois) have developed such toxic fans so quickly. I feel bad for them," one user wrote. Others expressed hope that the close-knit cast would remain strong amidst the controversy.
Season 2 Production Confirmed and Bonus Episode Teased
Amidst the controversy, exciting news has emerged regarding the future of Heated Rivalry. Showrunner Jacob Tierney has confirmed that the highly anticipated second season will begin filming in August, with a target release as early as April 2027. "There will be more Heated Rivalry on your TVs, like, truly, as soon as humanly possible," Tierney declared during an appearance on CBS Mornings with Gayle King.
Executive producer Brendan Brady encouraged fans to "enjoy the yearn" of waiting for the new season. Furthermore, speculation is rife about a potential bonus episode bridging the gap between seasons. This stems from an interview with The Toronto Star where executive producer Justin Stockman mentioned discussions about a "stand-alone episode between seasons to tide fans over."
Fans noted that TV database IMDb lists the series as having seven episodes, not the six that aired, fueling excitement. Reactions on social media were ecstatic, with one viewer exclaiming, "WE ARE GETTING A BONUS EPISODE????? CAN SOMEONE CONFIRM??" while another simply stated, "I need it."
Broader Context and Streaming Success
The success of Heated Rivalry has contributed to a growing appetite for ice-skating themed dramas. Netflix's recent release, Finding Her Edge, a teen drama about a figure skater, has also shot up the most-watched charts, indicating a sustained interest in the genre. Heated Rivalry itself, based on Rachel Reid's Game Changer novels, continues to be available for streaming on Sky and NOW, maintaining its devoted following despite the challenges posed by a toxic minority within its fanbase.
