Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has issued a sharp rebuke to former US President Donald Trump, urging him to cease what he described as "random outbursts on social media" following Trump's latest offer to dispatch an American hospital ship to the autonomous Danish territory.
Greenland's Firm Rejection of Trump's Proposal
In a clear and unequivocal response on Sunday, Mr Nielsen stated "no thanks" to Trump's proposal, which was announced via social media on Saturday. The former president claimed he was collaborating with Louisiana Governor and special envoy to Greenland, Jeff Landry, to organise the deployment of a hospital boat to the Arctic island.
"President Trump's idea of sending an American hospital ship here to Greenland has been noted," Nielsen declared in a Facebook post. "But we have a public healthcare system where treatment is free for citizens. It is a deliberate choice."
Call for Diplomatic Dialogue Over Social Media Statements
While emphasising that Greenland remains open to dialogue and cooperation with the United States, the Prime Minister delivered a pointed message to the former president. "But talk to us instead of just making more or less random outbursts on social media," he asserted, highlighting the preference for formal diplomatic channels over unpredictable online communications.
Background of Escalating Tensions
The hospital ship proposal emerges against a backdrop of significant diplomatic strain between Greenland, Denmark, and the United States. Late last month, the three parties initiated formal talks to address mounting tensions within the NATO defence alliance, primarily stemming from Trump's repeated expressions of interest in acquiring the mineral-rich Arctic territory.
Greenlanders have consistently maintained that their territory is "not for sale," while Trump has justified his pursuit of Greenland as rooted in national security concerns regarding the strategically located island.
Medical Evacuation Incident in Greenlandic Waters
Trump's social media announcement about the hospital ship came just hours after Denmark's Joint Arctic Command revealed it had conducted an urgent medical evacuation of a crew member from a United States submarine operating in Greenlandic waters.
The operation occurred approximately seven nautical miles (thirteen kilometres) outside Nuuk, Greenland's capital. A Danish Seahawk helicopter deployed from an inspection ship successfully retrieved the individual, who was subsequently transferred to a hospital in Nuuk for urgent medical treatment.
Danish authorities confirmed the evacuation on their Facebook page, though it remains unclear whether Trump's hospital ship proposal had any direct connection to this specific medical incident.
Strained Historical Alliances
The historically strong bilateral relationship between NATO allies Denmark and the United States, forged in the aftermath of World War II, has faced severe pressure in recent months. Trump's intensified rhetoric regarding a potential US takeover of Greenland has created diplomatic friction, despite Greenland's autonomous status within the Kingdom of Denmark.
The ongoing diplomatic talks represent an attempt to resolve what has become a significant crisis between the parties, with Greenland's leadership maintaining their commitment to sovereignty while seeking to preserve cooperative international relationships through proper diplomatic channels.
