Exclusive: Inside Michael Jackson's 'Chaotic' Bedroom - Rotting Food and 'Creepy' Child Statues
Former detective Ruby Wolff, who led the raid on Neverland in response to child abuse allegations, has returned to the singer's ranch with Associate Editor Tom Bryant. In a fascinating interview, she opens up about her time working on the high-profile case, shedding new light on the disturbing scenes she encountered over two decades ago.
Emotional Return to Neverland
Standing before the Neverland gates after 23 years, former detective Ruby Wolff was overcome with emotion as she spotted a child's drawing etched on a wall. The retired police officer last visited in 2003 when she raided Michael Jackson's property following accusations from 13-year-old Gavin Arvizo, who alleged the singer had molested him.
Returning to the King of Pop's ranch, nestled in the rolling hills an hour north of Santa Barbara, California, proved to be an unsettling experience. However, it was the sight of a cartoonish tribute to the shamed singer among hundreds of scrawled messages that brought her to tears.
"It's stopped me right here in my tracks," she said, wiping away tears. "The innocence of a child is the most valuable thing, and that wasn't even regarded, not just on Jackson's end but on the jury's end too. An innocent child drawing this... without knowing the backstory."
Haunting Memories of the Raid
Ruby Wolff knows the backstory all too well. She remains haunted by the failure to convict Jackson after a four-month trial where she testified, resulting in his acquittal. She agreed to revisit the late singer's home ahead of the release of a new Hollywood film that glorifies his life, set for next month.
Ruby vividly recalls the disturbing scenes that greeted her as she entered the gates. "Music started to play... it was Peter Pan music," she said. "I was kind of going, 'Where is that music coming from?' Then you start seeing the statues of the children in the green grass area. It was creepy."
Walking through the house, Ruby was shocked by its ostentatious nature. "I've never seen a house like that. You're looking at these chandeliers... everything was very over-consumption. Every space on the wall seemed to be filled with a picture of him and a celebrity, or a president, or a queen, or a king."
Inside Jackson's Bedroom
Ruby was tasked with locating Jackson's bedroom to uncover evidence crucial to the case. She was alarmed to find that all guests had to ring a doorbell to enter. "The law enforcement mind is: 'What are you hiding? Why would you need to be notified or alarmed before someone could even come into your room?'" she explained.
Upon entering, she described the environment as "next level uncomfortable" due to children's statues in a hallway leading to a larger room. Inside, she encountered chaotic scenes, including rotting food, overflowing drawers, and his famous stage costumes scattered across the floor.
"Everything in that room was very messy," she said. "As we started to search, I came across a package of sausage in a little plastic bag... I don't know how long it had been there, but it was already bad. In the bedroom bathroom, the drawers were not in order and all out. There was a nice watch from Sophia Loren, with this nice little letter card, and it was just thrown in there. There was no regard for things... it was just thrown in like a junk drawer. We found his glove; it was just thrown on the floor. It didn't matter that Michael Jackson had all this money... in reality, he's a human, just like everybody else."
Bizarre Discoveries and Key Evidence
Bizarrely, a small door in the bathroom led to an area Ruby believes Jackson used to access secretly. "We thought that was kind of interesting... like, 'What's he doing in there?'" she remarked. Equally baffling was Jackson's sleeping arrangement in a tiny loft space under a heavy rhinestone duvet. "Who could sleep under this... it was so heavy," she added.
Ruby's mission was to find evidence corroborating Gavin's story, and after a few hours, she made a significant breakthrough. "I came across the briefcase that had pornographic materials in it that was consistent with what the victim stated he had been groomed with... It was a piece of the puzzle that had been found," she revealed.
The Trial and Aftermath
Ruby remembers the subsequent court case as "absolute chaos" as Jackson's fans descended upon Santa Maria. At one point, Jackson got out of his SUV and danced on the roof, leaving her appalled. "You're being charged with a very serious crime... why would you think it was okay to perform," she said.
During the trial, Ruby testified and came face-to-face with Jackson. "He just looked at me, and there was just this stone-cold look like a statue. I didn't see that he was concerned about it. He looked me straight in the eye, and I looked at him straight back," she recalled. The defense portrayed Gavin's family, especially his mother Janet, as motivated by money and fame, leading to Jackson's acquittal after 14 weeks.
"It was a tough one. Even now, it draws some emotion. When the verdict came back, it was such a blow that we just went, 'Well, where's the justice?' How many fans did we have in the jury? That would have been a nice question to ask," Ruby reflected. After the case, she continued working on crimes against children and expresses discomfort with the upcoming Jackson biopic, Michael.
Concerns Over the New Biopic
Starring Jackson's nephew Jaafar Jackson as the singer, along with Hollywood heavyweights Miles Teller and Colman Domingo, the film is said to glorify the star, who died in 2009 at age 50. The newly-released trailer makes no mention of the child abuse allegations.
When asked for a message to producers, Ruby said, "I would say, 'Whose pockets are you trying to fill?' What are you doing to make an impact and to protect innocent children? It is them we should be remembering."
