The children of an elderly British couple detained by the Taliban in Afghanistan have made a desperate plea for their parents' release, warning that time is running out.
In an emotional statement, the family expressed grave concerns over the deteriorating health of their mother and father, who have been held in custody for months without trial.
A Race Against Time
The couple, both in their late 70s, were arrested during what was supposed to be a humanitarian mission to Afghanistan. Their children now fear their parents may not survive the harsh prison conditions much longer.
'Every day that passes increases the risk to their lives,' said one of their daughters. 'We're begging the UK government and international community to intervene before it's too late.'
Diplomatic Efforts Stalled
Despite repeated appeals from the family and human rights organisations, diplomatic negotiations for their release appear to have reached an impasse. The Taliban authorities have yet to specify formal charges against the couple.
Foreign Office officials have confirmed they are aware of the case and are providing consular assistance, but have declined to comment on ongoing negotiations.
Growing International Concern
Human rights groups have condemned the detention as a violation of international law, particularly given the couple's age and health conditions. Amnesty International has called for their immediate release on humanitarian grounds.
'Detaining elderly foreign nationals without charge sets a dangerous precedent,' said a spokesperson for the organisation. 'This situation requires urgent resolution at the highest levels.'
The family's plea comes as relations between the UK and Taliban-led Afghanistan remain strained, with several Western nations yet to formally recognise the regime.
