The son of a British couple imprisoned in Iran has issued a stark warning about their safety, following the closure of the UK embassy in Tehran during a period of deadly civil unrest.
‘Dangerous’ Conditions and Overcrowded Jail
Joe Bennett said on Wednesday evening that his parents, Craig and Lindsay Foreman, are in a "dangerous" situation. He detailed "unsafe" and "frightening" conditions in the prison where they are being held, including vermin in living areas and daily fights among inmates.
He specifically highlighted severe overcrowding, which has been exacerbated by the Iranian regime's crackdown on nationwide anti-government protests. "It is overcrowded, it's even more overcrowding now that these protests have gone on in Tehran," Bennett stated.
Diplomatic Withdrawal and Family's Frustration
The UK government announced on Wednesday that its embassy in the Iranian capital has been temporarily closed and will operate remotely due to the demonstrations. This development has left the Foremans, who were arrested in January 2025 and charged with espionage during a world trip, without a physical safe haven.
"The trouble is, their plan was to go to the embassy... and now... Where do they go? What do they do?" Bennett told the BBC's Newsnight programme, having last spoken to his parents that same day.
The family has expressed significant frustration with the UK government's response, contrasting it with the actions of allies. "I look at other nations – France, for example, US, Italy – when their citizens are put in a similar situation, there's an advocacy from them at the highest level of government... and the UK haven't done that," Bennett said.
Legal Appeals and Government Response
According to the family, an application for bail was formally submitted by the Foremans' Iranian legal team this week. Their defence lawyers have written to the court asserting the couple's innocence and claiming their continued detention is unlawful.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has told Bennett it is still "assessing the situation". In a previous statement, an FCDO spokesman said: "We are deeply concerned by reports that Craig and Lindsay Foreman have been charged with espionage in Iran. We continue to raise this case directly with the Iranian authorities."
The backdrop to this personal crisis is a violent national upheaval. Thousands of protesters have reportedly been killed in Iran in recent weeks, and officials have signalled that executions of detained suspects are imminent.
For Joe Bennett, the focus remains singular: "My mum and Craig are two innocent UK citizens that are caught up in the middle of all of this. So for us, it's about their safety and prompt return home, however that comes."
