British Couple in Iran Prison Share Emotional Plea to Return Home
Lindsay and Craig Foreman, a British couple from East Sussex currently serving a 10-year prison sentence in Iran, have issued an emotional update expressing their desperate hopes of returning home. The pair, both in their 50s, have been detained for over 14 months in Tehran's notorious Evin prison on espionage charges, which they vehemently deny.
Capture During Motorcycle Journey
The Foremans were arrested in January 2025 while on a round-the-world motorcycle tour. They had entered Iran from Armenia on December 30 with valid visas, an approved itinerary, and a guide, intending to pass through the country en route to Australia. Despite ignoring Foreign Office travel advice, thousands of other tourists had reportedly entered and exited Iran without incident at that time.
"We did not imagine that this trip of a lifetime could turn into being captured at gunpoint and held in solitary confinement," Lindsay reflected on their decision to travel through the country.
Harsh Prison Conditions
While adapting to the difficult circumstances in prison, Lindsay revealed that the most challenging aspect of her detention is being separated from loved ones back in the UK. "Knowing they're out there and not being able to hug them - that's the hardest thing. Thank you for not forgetting us," she said. "I just can’t wait to come home."
Their son, Joe Bennett, provided disturbing details about their living conditions to Reuters, describing how his parents are "living under a ‘drone of drones’, the constant, maddening buzz of hundreds of machines in the sky." He added that they endure harsh circumstances including being surrounded by rats and cockroaches, sleeping on metal bunks without mattresses, and experiencing constant physical pain.
Family Concerns and Regional Conflict
The couple's family has expressed extreme worry about their wellbeing, with concerns intensifying following explosions near Evin prison amid escalating regional conflict. Relatives reported that after speaking with Lindsay and Craig, the pair had heard "lots of explosions" nearby, with blasts reportedly strong enough to damage parts of the prison facility.
Concerns grew further after guards reportedly abandoned the prison out of fears they could be caught in a potential US strike. Joe Bennett has urgently called on UK and US officials to prioritize efforts to secure the release of foreign nationals detained in Iran.
Government Response and Diplomatic Efforts
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has previously described the couple's sentencing as "totally unjustifiable" and stated that the government would "pursue this case relentlessly" until they are safely returned to the UK. However, speaking this week, Joe Bennett claimed that Yvette Cooper offered only "delay and uncertainty" during a recent meeting.
A spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry emphasized in an emailed statement that the welfare of British nationals detained in Iran remains a priority "for this government and continued to be during the current situation in the Middle East." The spokesperson reiterated that "Craig and Lindsay's sentences are completely appalling and totally unjustifiable" and confirmed that diplomatic efforts would continue until the couple is safely returned to the UK and reunited with their family.
