Police Launch Fresh Search for Missing Mum and Son at Killer's Former Home

A new excavation is set to begin near the former property of convicted killer William MacDowell, as authorities intensify efforts to locate the remains of Renee MacRae and her three-year-old son Andrew. This search marks 50 years since their mysterious disappearance in 1976, with police and army experts now focusing on land spanning several acres around MacDowell's old home.

Historic Investigation Reopened

Specialists from the Royal Engineers have been drafted in after a historic survey of the site revealed disturbed ground dating back to the time of Renee and Andrew's disappearance. Forensics teams have received approval to commence digs around the property, with the aim of uncovering any evidence related to the cold case.

Renee and Andrew vanished on November 12, 1976, after Renee's BMW car was found ablaze in a lay-by near Dalmagarry Quarry, approximately 12 miles south of Inverness. Despite extensive investigations over the decades, their bodies have never been recovered.

Killer's Secrets Taken to the Grave

William MacDowell, known as Bill, was convicted of the murders and sentenced to life in prison, but he died in hospital just five months after his conviction in February 2023. At 81 years old, he took the secrets of the whereabouts of Renee and Andrew's bodies to his grave, having eluded punishment for 45 years prior to his conviction.

MacDowell was living near Inverness at the time of the murders and worked as company secretary for a building firm owned by Renee's estranged husband, Gordon. He was sacked from his role when his affair with Renee emerged, and at the time of her disappearance, Renee believed they were planning a weekend away before a move to Shetland.

Recent Breakthroughs and Ongoing Efforts

In March of last year, a breakthrough occurred when items believed to be a potty and a carpet were found next to the A9, near the same lay-by where Renee's car was discovered. This discovery has spurred renewed investigative efforts, with Police Scotland vowing to continue until the remains are found.

Detective Superintendent Brian Geddes stated, "Our investigation into the murders of Renee and Andrew MacRae remains ongoing and officers continue to examine all available lines of investigation." Renee and Andrew's relatives have been informed of the latest developments, as authorities hope this fresh search will bring long-awaited closure to the case.
