Australian Influencer Faces Backlash Over Dubai Airstrike Video Remarks
An Australian social media influencer has been widely criticised as 'selfish' and 'entitled' after sharing a video from Dubai during Iranian retaliatory airstrikes, where she expressed shock that the conflict had reached what she considered a safe destination.
Video Captures Missile Attack on Luxury Dubai Landmarks
Louise Starkey posted an Instagram clip from her hotel balcony in the Jumeirah Village Circle area, approximately fifteen kilometres from the bomb sites, showing Iranian missiles heading toward targets in the United Arab Emirates. The footage, viewed over a million times, captured Starkey wearing a white robe while visibly distressed, clutching her face as she observed drones in the sky.
'I'm scared. I'm actually so scared,' she stated in the video. 'It's not meant to be happening here. Can't everyone just chill out?'
She described hearing loud explosions throughout the day that shook windows, noting the unusual sound before finally witnessing the drones during filming. 'This is not fun guys. We're supposed to be in the safest place,' Starkey added. 'I love the UAE, I love being here, I feel so safe all the time - and now I can see it. Please just stop.'
Public Reaction Divided Over 'Selfish' Statement
The comment 'It's not meant to be happening here' sparked particular controversy among viewers, with many accusing Starkey of displaying privilege and insensitivity toward conflicts in less affluent regions.
'Not meant to be happening here has to be one of the most selfish statements I have ever heard. As if it's meant to happen anywhere,' one commenter wrote. Another added, 'The entitlement. It happens in Gaza, it's fine. But if it happens to your luxury lifestyle, 'it's not meant to happen.'
Some Dubai residents urged against spreading panic, with one stating, 'We trust our leadership, and this phase will pass. Let's avoid sharing videos that spread fear or panic.'
However, other viewers expressed sympathy for Starkey's situation. 'Crazy scenes today that we would've never imagined,' one supporter wrote. Another commented, 'Hang in there, girly. It's not nice for anyone. But worry about what you can control! And that's your mindset.'
Background of Iranian Retaliatory Strikes
The airstrikes occurred as part of Iran's ongoing retaliation against the United States and Israel for attacks on Iranian soil. The strikes damaged an international airport terminal and prominent luxury landmarks including the Burj Al Arab hotel and Palm Jumeirah development.
These military actions have created significant regional instability, prompting the Australian Government to elevate its travel advisory for much of the Middle East to 'do not travel' status. The Smartraveller warning cites a 'volatile security situation' with risks of further reprisal attacks and escalation across the region.
'Due to the volatile security situation in the region and military strikes we've raised our level of advice for the UAE to do not travel,' the official advisory states.
The Daily Mail has contacted Louise Starkey for comment regarding the controversy surrounding her viral video and the subsequent public reaction to her statements during the Dubai airstrikes.
