In a significant escalation of its ongoing campaign against narcotics networks, the United States military has executed another targeted strike against a drug trafficking vessel in the Pacific Ocean. US Southern Command confirmed the operation, which resulted in the deaths of three individuals described as 'male narco-terrorists.'
Lethal Kinetic Strike Ordered by General Donovan
The attack, characterized as a 'lethal kinetic strike,' was carried out on Wednesday under the direct orders of US Southern Command General Francis L Donovan. Military officials stated that the vessel was operated by a 'Designated Terrorist Organization' and was actively engaged in narcotics trafficking along established routes in the Eastern Pacific.
Intelligence assessments confirmed the boat's illicit activities before the strike was authorized. No American military personnel were harmed during the operation, according to the official announcement from US Southern Command.
Declassified Video Reveals Dramatic Attack
The command released a declassified video on its website and social media platform X, showcasing the destruction of the suspected drug smuggling boat. The black and white footage depicts a three-engine speedboat cutting through ocean waves.
Approximately five seconds into the video, a missile enters the frame and strikes the vessel, triggering a substantial explosion. The speedboat is then seen engulfed in flames, gradually coming to a halt before the recording concludes.
Operation Southern Spear: Background and Controversy
This latest strike forms part of Operation Southern Spear, an initiative launched by the Trump administration on September 1, 2025, with the explicit goal of reducing the flow of drugs entering the United States. The operation's declared objectives include 'detecting, disrupting, and degrading transnational criminal and illicit maritime networks.'
US Southern Command, one of eleven unified combatant commands within the Department of Defense, oversees the execution of Operation Southern Spear across its area of responsibility, encompassing the Caribbean, Latin America below Mexico, and surrounding waters.
Legal Framework and Designations
Following the unveiling of Operation Southern Spear, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the designation of several cartels and the regime of former Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro as Foreign Terrorist Organizations. In December 2025, President Trump further signed an executive order classifying fentanyl as a weapon of mass destruction.
These legal and policy moves have provided the United States with expanded authority to target and destroy suspected drug trafficking vessels, as well as to eliminate their operators without standard due process protections.
Mounting Criticism and Operational Statistics
Critics of Operation Southern Spear have condemned the strikes as illegal, expressing grave concerns about the potential for faulty intelligence leading to the deaths of innocent individuals. Despite these objections, the campaign continues to intensify.
Wednesday's attack brings the total number of vessels destroyed under Operation Southern Spear to fifty-two, with a cumulative death toll of one hundred and seventy-four individuals. This averages to approximately seven boats destroyed and twenty-three people killed per month since the operation's inception.
Recent Operational Activity
Between April 11 and Wednesday's strike, three additional attacks were conducted as part of the ongoing campaign. Two boats in the Pacific were destroyed on Saturday, resulting in two confirmed fatalities, with a third individual who abandoned the vessel presumed dead. A second strike on the same day killed three more people. A third vessel was destroyed on Monday, claiming two additional lives.
The persistent military action underscores the United States' committed, albeit controversial, strategy to combat narcotics trafficking through direct kinetic engagement in international waters.
