Healey Insists US Remains 'Absolutely Locked In' to NATO Despite Trump's Threats

Defence Secretary John Healey has emphatically stated that the United States remains "absolutely locked into" the NATO alliance, despite a fresh wave of scathing criticism and withdrawal threats from President Donald Trump. This declaration comes amid increasingly strained relations between the UK and the US, highlighting deep concerns over the future of the transatlantic defence pact.

Trump's Latest Social Media Rant Targets NATO

On Wednesday evening, President Trump unleashed another social media tirade on Truth Social, accusing NATO of not being "there when we needed them" and warning they would not be there in the future. His post, which also referenced Greenland in a derogatory manner, followed a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House. The White House had indicated Trump intended to have a "very frank and candid" discussion about his frustrations with the alliance.

This incident is the latest in a series of critical remarks from Trump, who has previously labelled NATO a "paper tiger" and raised the possibility of the US quitting the organisation. He has consistently argued that the US bears an unfair financial burden within the alliance, carrying other member states.

Healey Urges Focus on Actions Over Words

Speaking at the London Defence Conference on Friday, Mr Healey urged allies to concentrate on concrete actions rather than the volatile exchange of words on social media. "If we focus on our actions, rather than just simply the exchange of words and social media posts, then the fundamentals for me remain that America is absolutely locked into - with benefits as well as massive contributions - to NATO," he asserted.

Healey acknowledged that European nations must increase their efforts, stating, "We have to do more – we are, and we will – on the European side." He emphasised the enduring shared values that have sustained the alliance through political cycles on both sides of the Atlantic for decades.

Starmer Calls for European Allies to Do More

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer also addressed the situation on Friday, reinforcing his long-standing argument that European allies need to bolster their contributions to NATO. "It's the single most effective military alliance the world has ever known. Do we Europeans need to do more? Yes, I've been making that argument for the best part of two years," he said.

Starmer highlighted NATO's defensive role and its historical success in maintaining security, noting it is in both American and European interests. His comments come after a phone call with Trump on Thursday evening, where they discussed a "practical plan" for shipping in the Strait of Hormuz following the Middle East ceasefire.

Strained UK-US Relations and Broader Alliance Tensions

The relationship between Downing Street and the White House has faced particular pressure recently. Trump has made a barrage of critical remarks aimed at the UK, especially after its refusal to join offensive operations in his war on Iran. At a White House Easter event, he likened Sir Keir to Neville Chamberlain, suggesting the UK had "a long way to go."

Prime Minister Starmer has expressed frustration over the economic repercussions of the Iran conflict, stating he was "fed up" with rising bills in the UK due to the actions of global leaders. The war has caused an economic shock felt worldwide, further straining the NATO alliance.

When questioned about whether Trump's stance indicates a longer-term shift in US-NATO relations, Healey responded, "I think this is a long term shift where Europe has to recognise that we've got to do more of the heavy lifting for our own security and within NATO." This underscores a growing recognition that European members must enhance their defence capabilities to ensure the alliance's resilience amid political uncertainties.
