Are You Wasting Money on Vitamin D Supplements? Experts Reveal the Truth
Vitamin D supplements: Are you wasting money?

Millions of Britons could be throwing away their hard-earned cash on vitamin D supplements they don't actually need, according to leading health experts.

While vitamin D is crucial for bone health and immune function, recent studies indicate that most healthy adults get enough from sunlight and diet alone during spring and summer months.

Who Really Needs Supplements?

Nutrition specialists highlight that only certain groups require regular vitamin D supplementation:

  • People who get little sun exposure (housebound individuals or those who cover up for cultural reasons)
  • Those with darker skin living in northern climates
  • Elderly residents in care homes
  • Individuals with specific medical conditions affecting vitamin D absorption

The Sunshine Vitamin Controversy

Professor Susan Lanham-New, head of nutritional sciences at the University of Surrey, explains: 'Our bodies can store vitamin D from summer sun exposure to last through winter. Routine supplementation isn't necessary for most healthy adults.'

However, the NHS still recommends that everyone consider taking 10 micrograms daily between October and March when sunlight is weaker.

Potential Risks of Over-Supplementation

Excessive vitamin D intake can lead to:

  1. Kidney stones
  2. Nausea and vomiting
  3. Muscle weakness
  4. Confusion and disorientation

Nutritionist Dr. Sarah Brewer advises: 'Have your levels checked before starting high-dose supplements. More isn't always better when it comes to vitamins.'
