A recent study has revealed that 99% of dogs have faecal matter on their paws after returning from walks, prompting veterinary professionals to urge owners to clean their pets' feet after every outdoor excursion.
Beyond the obvious hygiene concerns, the dirt and bacteria that accumulate on paws can lead to skin irritation and dermatitis in dogs. Veterinary experts particularly advise extra care during autumn and winter, when mud and snow can adversely affect animals' skin and nails.
In a TikTok video, vet Pancho Cavero emphasised the importance of paw maintenance, explaining that paw pads serve as shock absorbers, protect against extreme temperatures, provide traction, and contain sweat glands for marking territory. He described them as 'true miracles of nature' that require regular cleaning to remain healthy.
Owners are encouraged to spend just two minutes after each walk wiping their dog's paws with a damp cloth or pet-safe wipes, a simple routine that can significantly reduce the risk of spreading faecal matter indoors and prevent paw-related health issues.
