The Batch Lady Suzanne Mulholland's Kitchen Secrets and Favourite Foods
Suzanne Mulholland's Kitchen Secrets and Favourite Foods

What is the most luxurious item in your cupboard? A can of La Belle Chaurienne's confit duck (£19.95, thegoodfoodnetwork.com/shop). It is such a treat, but my family loves it.

Toast topping of choice

Peanut butter, banana and a sprinkle of cinnamon, or my homemade lemon curd.

Condiment that improves any meal

Chovi Allioli Creamy Garlic Mayo Dip (£1.75, ocado.com). It is a Spanish brand with a traditional recipe that gets the level of garlic to creaminess just right. I buy a huge catering tub because my teenage son eats so much!

Author and TV presenter Suzanne Mulholland, 50, known as The Batch Lady, shares her kitchen secrets.

Best brand of tinned fish

John West tuna in spring water (£1.55, Sainsbury's). It gives it a fresh taste, rather than brine, which leaves it saltier and drier.

Restaurant you want to return to

Høst in Denmark. It serves great food using Nordic ingredients. The smoked scallops with cucumber and horseradish are amazing.

Top spot for drinks with a view

The rooftop bar at Johnnie Walker in Edinburgh, overlooking the castle. It serves all types of whisky cocktails and there is often a piper on the corner outside.

Coffee brand you rate

Nespresso pods. The Inspirazione Italiana range (£4.70 for ten, nespresso.com) has great depth of flavour for a quick morning fix.

Best supermarket chocolate

M&S's Vanilla Fudge Bar and Cappuccino Bar are fantastic (£1.40 each).

Top foodie holiday destination

The Seychelles. We often stop at Chez Lamar on Mahé before heading out to the remote islands. It serves excellent Creole food, and the fish is always so fresh and beautifully spiced.

Your secret ingredient

I always use a crushed Oxo beef stock cube with some olive oil as a marinade for steak.

You can only eat one kind of potato for the rest of your life – what is it?

Jacket potatoes. They are healthy, affordable and simple to make. If I lived alone, I would revert to being a student and live on them!

What is your Deliveroo order?

A burrito from Bonnie Burrito Mexas in Edinburgh. They make Scottish-Mexican fusion food, offering dishes like haggis burritos, which are always fun.

One thing that brings a salad to life

Pomegranate seeds add texture, crunch and colour. Plus, you can freeze them!

Favourite brand of crisps

Good old-fashioned Walkers Quavers or Wotsits are my bag, although I rarely eat them in public as they look better suited to a five-year-old than a 50-year-old.

Best bread

Warburton's crumpets (£1.15 for nine, ocado.com). I adore them and they seem to be the only product unaffected by food inflation.

Preferred butter

Waitrose French butter with salt crystals (£3.50). It is rich, with large salt chunks.

Favourite cheese

Saint Agur Blue Crème. It is mild but has a nice tang.

Best takeaway coffee

Fortitude in Edinburgh. Cortados are often made like flat whites with too much milk, but theirs is a perfect blend of strong coffee with just the right amount of milk.

Most useful kitchen gadget or utensil

A bag stand (around £5.50 for two, amazon.co.uk) and Peva freezer bags (£5.99 for six, lakeland.co.uk) are my core batch-cooking essentials.

Ten-minute meal that always delivers

My grab-and-cook fish pie, which takes five minutes to prep. You mix white fish, smoked fish and trout with frozen peas, sweetcorn and double cream, then top with ready-made mash. Cook for 45 minutes and you have a perfect fish pie.
