Martin Lewis is widely known as one of the UK's most trusted voices on managing personal finances. Millions tune into his regular segments on This Morning, his own show The Martin Lewis Money Show Live, or visit his MoneySavingExpert platform for the latest advice on energy bills and mortgage rates.
While Martin has had great success with crunching numbers, the money guru suffered a personal tragedy as a young child, and has invested a lot of emotional energy into creating a secure family life for him and his wife and child behind the scenes. Here is a closer look at his life away from the cameras.
Martin's Famous Wife
Martin isn't the only one in his household with a successful career in broadcasting. The financial journalist has been married to Lara Lewington since 2009. Lara, who is herself a well-known presenter and technology journalist, has appeared on a range of TV programmes over the years. She previously presented the BBC's long-running technology show Click, and has also worked with Five News and Sky News.
More recently, she has become known as a technology and artificial intelligence expert for Lorraine and This Morning. On top of her appearances on screen, Lara also has a successful career as a writer. She wrote a technology column for Woman magazine, and released her own book, Hacking Humanity: Innovations For a Healthier Life, in July 2025.
According to TV Guide, the couple first met in 2005, and got married four years later. Martin's proposal was very sweet and slightly unconventional. During an appearance on his ITV programme How to Win at Board Games, Lara once revealed: "Martin proposed to me on a Scrabble set. Once he got the letters out, I thought he had too many letters because 'Will you marry me' is more than seven letters."
She continued: "So I said: 'What are you doing? You've got too many letters on the board,' but he said: 'Wait, just wait.' And then of course he put them down and I felt bad because I accused him of cheating!"
During an appearance on Desert Island Discs in 2020, Martin shared the romantic first dance song they chose for their wedding. He told listeners: "So this was the first song we danced to at our wedding, so this is the song for my wife. This is Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons – Can't Take My Eyes Off You."
In the same interview, Martin shared a funny anecdote about what his holidays with Lara were like before they had a daughter. "When we started going out, in the days when she would allow me to do this, I'm banned now since we had a child, I'm not allowed to ride a motorbike any more," he joked. "We would occasionally hire a motorbike when we were on holiday. And we'd sit there and we'd sing this song in the sun, on the back of a moped, both wearing helmets, being safe, I should note."
Family Life
In 2012, Martin and Lara welcomed their daughter, Sapphire Susan Lewis, into the world. Martin announced her birth in a blog post at the time, writing: "While she weighs a wee 6lb 6oz, her weight in joy is immeasurable."
While the couple tend to keep their daughter largely out of the spotlight, Martin has occasionally shared sweet stories about her, and often affectionately calls her his Mini Money Saving Expert. During an interview with The Sunday Times he once opened up about how being a father was different from what he'd imagined before having Sapphire, admitting: "When my daughter was born, I remember saying: 'I'll buy her everything she needs, but not everything she wants.' Unfortunately, I didn't factor in her special power. Those eyes."
He has also given fans glimpses into her money-saving instincts on social media. When Sapphire was still little, he posted: "Mini MSE (age 7) said to me smiling tonight, having got some fruit from the fridge, 'Daddy these grapes are a day over their best-before date, but I know I can eat them still because they're not use buy, and they still look ok.' I'm very proud. What a chip off the old block :)"
Personal Struggles and Loss
While not many fans know this about him, Martin has at times spoken openly about the personal tragedy that shaped the course of his entire life. When he was just 11 years old, his mother, Susan Lewis, died in a horse-riding accident three days before his 12th birthday. He has described the heart-breaking incident as "the end of my childhood".
This loss led to years of grief and anxiety and profoundly shaped his outlook on life. In April 2025, during a stint on This Morning, Martin revealed some of the emotional challenges he faced when his stepmother joined the family. He shared: "My stepmother joined us in 1986, when I was 14. The stereotype wasn't the issue. The issue was, I had a stepmother joining me when I was still in terrible grief of the loss of my mother. There was nothing she could've done that would've made me want her to be there because of the reason she was there and the great difficulties. I remember when she took down some of our family photos."
Today, Martin is a patron of the children's bereavement charity Grief Encounter, and frequently advocates for life insurance.
Fighting Fraudsters
As his public profile has grown, Martin has also become a vocal campaigner against online fraud. Over the years, scammers have repeatedly used his image in fake adverts promoting bogus financial schemes. In 2019, he even took legal action against Facebook over the spread of scam adverts using his likeness. He later dropped the case and decided to work with the social media platform in an effort to tackle the problem.
Martin once spoke about how disheartening this issue has been on The Martin Lewis Podcast, saying: "I've spent my entire career trying to help consumers, and these criminals, thieves, organised crime people have perverted my reputation." Despite these challenges, Martin still uses his platform to help millions of Britons navigate their finances, while keeping his personal life with Lara and their daughter out of the spotlight.
