Latino Grocery Store in Delaware Hosts Monthly Concerts in Produce Aisle
Grocery Store Concerts in Delaware Draw Global Fans

A Latino grocery store in Delaware is turning its produce aisle into a music stage, drawing international attention and bands from far away. The Fiesta Fresh Market, a family-owned store in New Castle, hosts monthly Mercadito sessions featuring diverse artists and genres. The unconventional venue, with bananas and colorful fruit as backdrop, has rapidly gained a following online, with tens of thousands tuning in.

A Unique Stage

The bilingual alternative pop band Luna Luna performed recently, flanked by a neat stack of 79-cent bananas and rows of fruit. The show was part of the monthly series, far from typical music industry hubs. Owner Jose Luis Aguilar Garcia hopes the series highlights the persistence of joy and creativity in Latino communities, often only mentioned in news about immigration crackdowns.

Inspiration from Tiny Desk

Garcia has worked with food and music most of his life. Born in Mexico, he grew up near where the store now stands. He ran a photography and videography company producing regional Mexican music. In 2023, an artist on his label, DannyLux, performed at NPR's Tiny Desk Concert, inspiring Garcia to merge food and music. With capital from DannyLux's music, Garcia opened the store in 2024 with his sister and father.

Showcasing Culture

Initially, Garcia hoped the shows would attract business, but it was hard to sell local artists on the quirky context. Soon, the premise caught on. All acts in an April show had heard about the store on social media. The sessions now showcase a broad range of artists and genres, not just Spanish-language music. Garcia finds it interesting that people gather to hear any artist playing.

Global Audiences

Luna Luna, recognized by Billboard and Rolling Stone, performed at the late April show, a stark contrast to their U.S. tour stops. Large piñatas hung from the ceiling, and fluorescent grocery lighting illuminated the performance as customers shopped in the background. Lead singer Kavvi Gonzalez, born in Colombia, grew up shopping at such stores and finds the venue nostalgic. He appreciates combining real life and music culture, with people living regular life while they perform.
