Many homeowners may not give much thought to their garden fence, viewing it merely as a boundary marker or an aesthetic feature. However, experts now suggest that painting your fence white can serve a dual purpose: enhancing your garden's appearance while keeping a common pest at bay.
The Problem with Pigeons
Pigeons can be a significant nuisance for gardeners, stealing seeds, leaving droppings on furniture, and creating a general mess. Instead of resorting to spikes or chemical repellents, avian expert and founder of Birdzy, Isabelle Manseau, recommends using colour as a deterrent. She told Home and Gardens: “Pigeons are deterred by certain colours they perceive as threatening or unsettling, such as reflective or metallic shades and intense hues.”
Why White Works
Gardening experts at Sefton Meadows Garden Centre agree that white serves as a natural pigeon deterrent. They explained: “White is a ‘danger’ colour to birds, much in the same way that red is a warning colour to humans.” By incorporating more white into your garden, the space becomes less appealing to gathering pigeons.
Isabelle added: “Painting garden furniture or fence posts in shades of white can help deter pigeons while still keeping the aesthetic cohesive. A pop of colour can really liven up the yard too, especially if you’re putting in outdoor furniture for a small space.” If your old furniture is beyond repair, consider investing in new white pieces.
Painting Tips and Timing
Painters at Paint With Pinnacle also recommend white to deter pigeons, stating: “One shade that most pigeons avoid is white. A bright or dull white signals danger and alarm to birds and causes them to avoid these spaces.” It is advisable to paint your fence before spring ends, as pigeons are more active during the summer months.
Additional Natural Deterrents
Beyond painting fences, Sefton Meadows Garden Centre suggests adding white flowers to gardens. They noted: “Many birds use the white plumage in their feathers to show each other that there is danger ahead, so planting a variety of white flowers around areas you want to keep protected might be enough to deter birds from landing.” White flowers can be incorporated into planters, hanging baskets, or simply dotted around the garden in pots.
