John Thomson Opens Up on Ageing: 'You Don't Need to Overhaul Your Life'
Cold Feet star John Thomson has candidly shared the top signs you're getting older and the simple adjustments he's implementing to maintain fitness and health. In a revealing discussion, the actor emphasised that ageing is inevitable but can be embraced positively through minor, sustainable changes rather than drastic lifestyle overhauls.
The Telltale Signs of Ageing
According to research commissioned by American Pistachio Growers, which surveyed 5,000 individuals aged over 40, there are 25 key indicators that you're getting on a bit. These include perching down to pull your socks on, spotting your vintage wardrobe making a comeback, and muttering 'who?' while watching the BRIT Awards. Other notable signs involve preferring a peaceful pint over a wild night out, becoming indifferent to the latest fashion crazes, and suffering from a recurring ache that just won't go away.
The study found that 50 is the age when people typically start to feel they are 'no longer young'. However, a significant 38% of respondents believe that being old these days actually begins when you reach your 80s, rather than your 50s or 60s. This shift in perception highlights a growing trend towards viewing later life as a time of opportunity rather than limitation.
Embracing Healthier Habits
John Thomson, who has partnered with American Pistachio Growers to inspire middle-aged Brits to adopt a positive outlook on ageing, stated: 'Getting older is inevitable, but you can still live life to the full. It's about embracing experience, having a laugh about the realities of ageing and making small changes that actually make a difference. You don't need to overhaul your life - just make some healthy tweaks to your daily routine.'
Indeed, the research supports this approach, revealing that 36% of respondents have embraced healthier habits in an attempt to stay youthful. These habits include popping vitamins or supplements, opting for nutritious snacks (19%), and consuming more protein (17%). Maintaining a nutritious diet has emerged as a clear priority, with 60% of men and 61% of women reporting they've become more health-conscious as they age.
Nutritional Insights and Concerns
TV nutritionist Rob Hobson, also collaborating with American Pistachio Growers, highlighted the importance of smart choices: 'Getting older isn't about slowing down, it's about making smarter choices. Simple habits like eating nutrient-rich snacks, staying active and prioritising sleep can help you feel youthful for longer. Age is just a number, but how you fuel your body makes all the difference.'
Among those getting older, the chief concerns included wanting to dodge illness (59%), remain physically active (58%), and preserving their independence (47%). Suzanne Devereaux–McKinstrie, spokesperson for the non-profit organisation, added: 'Getting older isn't just about limitations, it's about opportunities. It's the perfect time to explore new hobbies, prioritise wellbeing and celebrate the confidence that comes with experience. A big part of that is focusing on diet. Unshelling a classic snack such as an American pistachio can help you stay strong and vibrant so you can say yes to life's opportunities.'
