Project Hail Mary has become the biggest opening of 2026, grossing $805 million worldwide in its opening weekend. The Amazon MGM film earned $140.9 million globally, including $80.5 million in North America and $60.4 million internationally. It also set a record for the best opening for an Amazon MGM title, surpassing 2023's Creed III.
On its second Friday, the sci-fi dramedy added $14.6 million in North America, with a projected $53.1 million weekend. The film is expected to drop just 34% from its opening weekend, bringing its domestic total to $162.9 million after two weekends. Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the film stars Ryan Gosling as a teacher sent into space to save the Sun.
Horror newcomer They Will Kill You opened in third place with $2.3 million on Friday from 2,778 locations, projected to earn $4.3 million by Sunday. Directed by Kirill Sokolov, the film stars Zazie Beetz as a housekeeper investigating disappearances in a New York high-rise.
Disney and Pixar's Hoppers took second place on Friday with $3.2 million, projected to earn $11 million by Sunday. The animated adventure, budgeted at $150 million, has grossed $138 million domestically after three weekends, with roughly double that worldwide.
Rounding out the top five were Reminders of Him with $1.5 million on Friday and Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge with $1.36 million. Reminders of Him is projected to reach $40.9 million domestically, while Dhurandhar 2 is expected to hit $22.8 million.
