A doctor who calls himself the 'healthcare Gordon Ramsay' has shared crucial advice on when stomach pain should prompt a trip to the emergency room. While most abdominal discomfort is harmless, certain symptoms can indicate life-threatening conditions.
Blocked Aorta
Dr Ahmed, a TikTok personality with over 500,000 followers, warns that sudden severe or tearing abdominal pain could signal a blocked aorta. This large artery carries blood from the heart, and a blockage may cause lower body pain during activity that eases with rest. Other signs include leg pain, erectile dysfunction, slow-healing sores, pale or cool skin, and numbness in the legs.
Intestinal Obstruction
If you experience bloating, inability to pass gas for a day, vomiting brown material, and intense pain, you may have an intestinal obstruction. Common causes include scar tissue from surgery, hernias, or colon cancer. This is a medical emergency requiring immediate treatment. Symptoms also include cramping, nausea, loss of appetite, rapid heartbeat, dark urine, and severe constipation.
Peritonitis
Severe abdominal pain that makes it impossible to stand or lie straight may indicate peritonitis, an infection of the stomach lining. This can result from a burst ulcer or appendix, Crohn's disease, pancreatitis, surgery, or injury. Left untreated, it becomes life-threatening. Additional symptoms include high fever, chills, rapid heartbeat, reduced urination, and a swollen stomach.
Intestinal Ischemia
Dull, crampy pain accompanied by black or bloody stools could signal intestinal ischemia, where blood flow to the intestines slows or stops. This often occurs due to blocked vessels or low blood pressure. Symptoms include sudden belly pain, urgent need to defecate, bloating, bloody stools, nausea, and confusion in older adults. Gradual onset may cause worsening pain over weeks, weight loss, and diarrhoea.
Dr Ahmed urges anyone experiencing these symptoms to seek medical help immediately, noting that many patients are sent home without proper investigation.
