After months of testing over a dozen at-home teeth whitening kits, seven products stood out for their ability to visibly brighten teeth without causing excessive sensitivity. The Icy Bear Dental 14-Day Smile Transformation Kit earned the top spot for its combination of gentle PAP+ formula and noticeable results within five days.
How the testing was conducted
Beauty editor Maisie Bovingdon, who has worn braces and maintains a strict oral care routine, tested each kit for at least one week, taking before-and-after photos to assess changes. She evaluated ease of use, sensitivity, residue, and overall whitening effect. Products ranged from whitening strips and pens to powders and complete tray systems.
Best overall: Icy Bear Dental 14-Day Smile Transformation Kit
This bundle, priced at £64.99, includes a diamond whitening toothpaste, a whitening powder, and 28 strips. All products use PAP+ to lift stains without peroxide. Within three days of daily use, Bovingdon noticed significant brightening, especially on discoloured canines. The strips were gentle on sensitive teeth and easy to remove. The only drawback was the powder's messiness.
Best budget buy: ISOHEALTH Carbon Teeth Whitening Strips
At £9.99 for 28 strips, these carbon strips offer a cruelty-free, peroxide-free option. They provided a strong hold for 30 minutes and produced visible whitening after a few sessions. However, the charcoal residue was messy and the strips were difficult to remove. Bovingdon recommends the clear version for a cleaner experience.
Best for rapid results: Rapid White 1-Week Tooth Whitening Power Set
This £10.67 kit from Amazon delivered the whitest results within a week. It includes two dental trays that must be moulded to the teeth, a whitening gel, and an accelerator. The process takes 10 minutes twice daily. Despite the fiddly preparation and unpleasant aftertaste, the results were dramatic. Bovingdon noted the kit cannot be used more than six times a year.
Best whitening strips: Spotlight Oral Care Ultra Teeth Whitening Strips
Priced at £33, these strips are designed for sensitive teeth and developed by dentists. They require one hour of wear per session. Bovingdon found them easy to apply but stubborn to remove due to a fixed retainer. After one week, the change was subtle, but the brand recommends a 14-day course for optimal results.
Best for maintenance: Colgate Max White Overnight Wand
This £10 pen applies a clear film that dries overnight, providing subtle whitening after one week. It is travel-friendly and gentle on sensitive teeth, but the dried film feels like PVA glue and can be difficult to remove without scraping enamel.
Best multifunctional: Hismile V34 Teeth Whitening Strips
These strips combine PAP+ whitening with colour-correcting technology. At £29 for a 14-day supply, they left Bovingdon's breath feeling fresh thanks to menthol. However, the purple formula left residue that required brushing off.
Best long-lasting: Smile Science PAP Teeth Whitening Powder
This £19.99 powder is designed to strengthen enamel while whitening. It is gentle and lasts for months, but whitening results were not prominent. The powder also tends to scatter, creating mess.
Expert insights on teeth whitening safety
Dr Sam Jethwa, founder of Bespoke Smile, advises using whitening products in moderation. "Overuse is where problems tend to arise, particularly with sensitivity," he said. He recommends using products on clean teeth and avoiding staining foods and drinks immediately after.
Dr Hanna Kinsella, founder of Icy Bear Dental, warns against unregulated kits. "If you're prone to tooth sensitivity, pay attention to the whitening technology used. Peroxide-free alternatives like PAP may be a better fit," she said.
For those with composite bonding, crowns, or veneers, Dr Jethwa notes that whitening treatments only work on natural tooth structure and may cause uneven colouring on existing dental work.
Dr Jethwa also dispelled the myth that whitening destroys enamel: "Professionally approved whitening products do not remove or 'strip away' enamel when used properly."
Results from at-home kits vary based on lifestyle factors such as coffee, tea, smoking, and certain medications. Dr Kinsella advises stopping use once the desired shade is reached to avoid over-whitening.
