Renowned for its place in the heart-healthy Mediterranean diet, this common ingredient is now linked to a significantly longer lifespan and improved skin health, according to comprehensive research.

Scientific Evidence for a Longer Life

A major 2020 study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology provided compelling evidence for olive oil's life-extending properties. The research, which analysed the diets of approximately 90,000 people over 28 years, discovered that consuming just half a tablespoon of olive oil daily led to a 14% reduced risk for heart disease.

The findings were even more striking for mortality rates. The study concluded that participants who consumed the most olive oil had a 19% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular causes compared to those who consumed the least. The research paper stated, "Higher olive oil intake was associated with lower risk of total and cause-specific mortality."

Furthermore, the study highlighted that replacing less healthy fats like margarine, butter, mayonnaise, and dairy fat with olive oil was associated with a lower overall risk of death.

Why Olive Oil is a Nutritional Powerhouse

Healthline has described extra virgin olive oil as "one of the healthiest oils on earth," and for good reason. It is rich in healthy monounsaturated fats, particularly oleic acid, and contains valuable minor components like vitamin E and polyphenols.

A diet rich in olive oil has been consistently linked to a lower risk of chronic diseases, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and certain types of cancer.

While the British Heart Foundation praised the large-scale study for its long duration and participant number, it noted that the lifestyles of the participants—all American nurses and health professionals—might not be fully representative of the wider population. Nonetheless, the evidence strongly positions olive oil as a simple, powerful addition to a health-conscious diet.
