Mary Berry's 5-Ingredient Sausage Rolls: Perfect for Summer Picnics

Mary Berry's simple sausage roll recipe, requiring just five ingredients, is ideal for summer picnics and gatherings. The dish features light, flaky puff pastry with a hearty filling, and can be customised with vegetables for children.

The recipe includes cheese and thyme for extra flavour, and notes that these homemade sausage rolls are always the first to go at a party. They can also be frozen, making them convenient for leftovers.

To prepare, preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan) and line two baking trays with paper. Mix sausage meat, cheese, and thyme in a bowl, seasoning with salt and pepper. Roll out the pastry to about 25x48cm, brush with beaten egg, and cut into six strips.

Divide the sausage mixture into six portions, roll each into a long shape, and place on each pastry strip. Brush edges with egg, fold the pastry over, and press to seal. Chill for 10 minutes, then cut each roll into five or six pieces. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden and cooked through.
