Kefir: The Gut Health Revolution Explained

Kefir, a fermented dairy drink, is gaining popularity as a gut health superfood. Unlike yoghurt, it contains a wider variety of microbes, which may offer additional health benefits such as improved weight management, reduced heart disease risk, and lower inflammation, according to emerging research.

One recent study from Stanford University linked high intake of fermented foods with lower markers of inflammation. Dr Megan Rossi, known as The Gut Health Doctor, explains that while clinical trials are limited, kefir's high strain diversity and bacteria count give it an edge over yoghurt.

A journalist who drank kefir daily for 30 days reported increased energy, better satiety, and improved skin. She consumed 100ml each morning on an empty stomach, as recommended for digestion. However, those with dairy allergies or lactose intolerance should exercise caution, as kefir still contains low levels of lactose.

Despite initial unpleasantness—the thick texture and coating sensation—the journalist grew to enjoy the taste and results. She recommends starting with small amounts and choosing flavours like honey or strawberry to ease into the habit.
