Potatoes are a staple in many kitchens, but they often spoil before use. A doctor has shared a simple hack to extend their shelf life significantly.
Dr Erin Carter, known on TikTok as @dr.erincarter, advises transferring potatoes from plastic bags to paper bags. Plastic traps moisture, causing sprouting and mould. Paper allows airflow, keeping potatoes dry.
The key trick is adding an apple to the paper bag. Apples release ethylene gas, a natural hormone that slows potato sprouting. Dr Carter says this can keep potatoes fresh for months.
Store the bag in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. Avoid storing potatoes with onions or garlic, as ethylene speeds their ripening.
